COVID-19 death rate is similar to that of the flu

Did WHO official just admit that COVID-19 death rate is similar to that of the flu?

It's just what we thought

BY:  DANIEL HOROWITZ

It was the single most impactful fact disseminated by the World Health Organization in influencing the unprecedented global panic over this virus. They claimed in early March that the infection fatality rate (IFR) for COVID-19 was 3.4%. Those of us who paid attention always knew that it was bogus, but how ironic that a top WHO official has now given us the denominator we were looking for, which proves that the fatality rate of this virus is right in line with seasonal flus, although more people will be infected.

Late last week, Dr. Mike Ryan, the executive director of the WHO's health emergencies programme, said that "our best guess" is that 10 percent of the world has been infected with the virus. That is roughly 750 million people. While he meant to sow panic and push for more restrictions, he inadvertently let the cat out of the bag and gave us the infection fatality rate.

According to the WHO, roughly 1 million people have died from the virus. Let's put aside the fact that so many of those people died with the virus, not because of it and that a majority would have died within the year. Working with their official count, it would mean the implied infection fatality rate for the world, according to the WHO, is 0.13%.

Guess what else has a similar fatality rate? If you guessed the plain old flu, you won the jackpot. Here are the estimated fatality rates in the U.S. of the past decade worth of flu seasons based on CDC data.

Screen Shot 2020-10-07 at 9.44.24 AM.png

Notice how the death rate for COVID-19 is in line with that of the seasonal flu. The 2017/2018 flu season was even considered a pandemic, and according to CDC's projected estimates, the death toll was "more than 80,000." That would result in an IFR of at least 0.18%. Yet, nobody in this country outside of those in health care circles even remembers it.

It's also important to keep in mind that the past two flu seasons were very mild, so COVID-19 likely killed out more people who were slated to die from respiratory viruses over the three-year window. Preliminary estimates of the 2019-20 flu season project just 22,000 deaths. Additionally, according to CDC, the flu essentially disappeared from the Southern Hemisphere this summer and there is solid evidence that the two respiratory viruses don't mix in the Northern Hemisphere either. Thus, you have to subtract the amount of typical flu deaths that we are missing and only focus on the net result, which further lowers the excess death burden of this virus. The number of flu deaths will likely remain low for the next year or two as a result of COVID-19.

Imagine what the fatality rate would have been had the World Health Organization not followed China's advice to liberally place people on ventilators during the early months of the epidemic?

Also, as time goes on, more and more people are getting the virus, yet fewer people are dying than before. For example, despite an explosion of cases in Europe, there are very few deaths. One doctor calculated the case fatality rate (CFR) in some European countries at 0.76%.

Typically, the infection fatality rate (IFR), which factors in all the undetected cases, is as much as 10 times lower than the fatality rate of known cases, which disproportionately include the more clinically acute cases.

Nowhere is this dynamic more evident than among college students. Unlike younger children who have shown very little capacity to spread the virus, college kids are spreading the virus like wildfire in dorms. Yet, according to Dr. Andrew Bostom of Brown University, who tabulated the data from 50 university systems, there were just three hospitalizations out of nearly 70,000 cases. There have been no reported COVID-19 deaths on campus.

The overreaction to the fatality rate and overstating of our ability to even mitigate it has real life consequences. Consider the fact that in Third World countries, the death rate from the virus has been particularly low, yet the disrupting responses to it led by Western elites have killed more people particularly in those countries. According to a report published last Thursday by Oxfam International, a massive global famine relief charity, 121 million more people could be "pushed to the brink of starvation this year," with as many as 12,000 dying a day from hunger due to the shutdowns and restrictions on commerce and production across the world. This is on top of more people dying from missed vaccinations, malaria, and medical treatment.

Thus, while western leaders can virtue signal about the need to stay home – all the while enjoying their fat paychecks and Amazon deliveries working from home – those in Africa and other underdeveloped areas will pay with their lives. This is all for a virus that has roughly the same fatality rate as the flu, albeit most people experience milder symptoms, often like those of spring allergies. To be fair, more people will get this virus than during a typical flu season, which will add to the death count, but there has been no proven method of stopping the spread.

What is so sad is that our leaders understood this reality before the media turned the virus into a political issue and decades of science and human experience were extirpated in favor of the virtue signaling opportunity of a lifetime. On March 26, Dr. Anthony Fauci, along with National Institutes of Health deputy director of clinical research Clifford Lane and CDC Director Robert Redfield, published an article in the New England Journal of Medicine making exactly this point.

They predicted that once the true number of asymptomatic and subclinical cases would be factored in, "the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively."

Sadly, they didn't factor in the virtue signaling they'd eventually endorse, and the countless lives lost to suicide, drug addiction, famine, and missed medical care thanks to their subsequent decision to exchange science for power and control.

Here ya' go, the truth in comparing the Swine Flu nd Covid-19:

The mortality rate for Covid and flu are similar ONLY in the same way

tigers and mice are similar - both being mammals.

The crude mortality ratio (the number of reported deaths divided by the reported cases) is between 3-4%. For seasonal influenza, mortality is usually well below 0.1%.Take Vice Poodle's Dense's example of the last swine flu (N1H1) compared with covid

                              N1H1               Covid

Total infected:  60,800,000       7,580,000

DEATHS                  12,469           212,914

Mortality Rate         0.02%             2.8%

So according to most recent data, Covid kills 140 TIMES as many infected people as the Swine Flu.

I guess for the mathematically (or morally) deprived, that would make NIH1 the same or worse.

Republicans seem alergic to facts, so for those who cannot do their own research or math, here's how big a lie the vice Poodle and his Toad are LYING about THE FLU AND COVID.

The specific cause (people who have the disease and die from it) for Swine Flu aka N1H1 is 0.02% and for Covid it's 2.8% or 140 times as deadly.

For the "crude death mortality" you divide deaths by the total population. So for N1H1 total deaths were 12,469 and US Pop in 2009 was 306.8M for a rate of 0.004% and for Covid the deaths are 212,914 and current population is 342M for a rate of 0.06%, FIFTEEN TIMES AS DEADLY, but YOU CANNOT USE THAT because the entire country has not yet been exposed to the Covid19 virus. Under ToadPOTUS, Republican stupidity will eventually infect just about everybody - in fact, they make this part of their dogma "sooner or later, we'll all get it" which is another lie - only the stupid are certain to get it. But it DOES give them a lame excuse to do nothing to prevent the spread of their disease.

The WHO data which GOPers misread/cannot understand is based on a population of over 6 BILLION, hundreds of millions of whom will never encounter the disease or get counted if they do.

Take you last sentence to heart as that is what happended here. The support article removes all deaths which involved underlying conditions which were activated by the virus. It is a typical far right article for far right viewers who understand none of it. They just sit idly by bowing and praising leader Trump.

Look at it this way. They are like the VP in the debate last night. So boring and unresponsive a fly could land on his head and walk around exploring to see what makes the far right tick, and then confirming this is a boring person fly away on its own and the VP just stood there doing nothing. Now we all see how the VP is around Trump. He is the fly in the room.

It is amazing how upset the regressives get when you point out facts which disagree with their carefully calculated myths.  1 million Covid deaths in 10 months vs 290 thousand flu deaths per year. Not really the same is it?

From Johns Hopkins University

Coronavirus vs. Flu Deaths
COVID-19: There have been approximately 1,050,771 deaths reported worldwide. In the U.S, 210,918, people have died of COVID-19 between January 2020 and October 7, 2020.*

Flu: The World Health Organization estimates that 290,000 to 650,000 people die of flu-related causes every year worldwide.

The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, the vast majority of people do not yet have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working to estimate the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be substantially higher (possibly 10 times or more) than that of most strains of the flu.

What makes COVID-19 so much more dangerous than the flu is that there’s no vaccine and no natural immunity in the world, meaning everybody is susceptible. A flu vaccine is available and effective to prevent some of the most dangerous types of the virus or to reduce the flu’s severity. The death rate appears to be about 10 times greater than the flu so the subject of this post is false.

In addition, COVID-19 appears to be about 10 times as deadly as the flu. People who contract coronavirus face a far greater risk of death than those who get the flu, according to the World Health Organization. WHO also says that COVID-19 is 10 times deadlier than the H1N1 swine flu strain.

The death rate for flu—usually about 0.1%—is thought to be many times lower than for the coronavirus. The current best estimate for the coronavirus is 1%.

And, because nobody has natural immunity, the number of individuals who could be infected and may have a fatal case of COVID-19 is everybody in the world vs. a subset of individuals in the case of influenza.

If Trumpers think it's just like the flu, then have at it, but try and infect you and yours, leave the people who are genuinely afraid of this virus alone. If you don't want to have the common courtesy of wearing masks in public try and stick to other Trumpers who don't care.

We who care and think the virus is deadly and can be caught very easily do wear masks and try and make it safe for everyone even if you're a Trumper.  I wear my mask to keep Everyone Safe.

I have never seen a person so ignorant and uncaring of the people in this Country as Trump, as a person let alone playing as a President. He got it because he was so dumb about the virus and thought he would never catch it, the Great Donald J Trump. He was almost daring the virus to get him, no mask, campaigns with no mask, crowds.  He just thinks he knows it all, and the virus proved he doesn't.

I'd say the virus started this battle, but it has to be seen who is the winner. If Trump does he can thank all the meds he got as President, I think the man Donald Trump would not have been as lucky.

The problem with the article are the actual facts.  In the 2018-2019 flu season (a full 12 months) there were (according to the cdc) i the US there were 35.5 million cases with 34200 deaths, or a death rate of 0.10%.  In the partial covid season in the US there have been 7.53 million cases with 211,000 deaths, or a death rate of 2.8%.

Since there is no way to know the number of Spanish Flu "cases" (since no test positive or negative existed), you have chosen to point out the percent of cases tested positive that died.  Instead, the more meaningful number is the percent of the population that died as result of Covid19 which is 0.0639 %.  A fraction of one percent or you can spin it the way you did!

Say no to Sleepy Joe or have more dead from Covid19!

nothappening, that is a ridiculous one sided "fun with statistics" argument.  You would have to say the same thing about the flu as well, yet somehow THOSE numbers are not factored out.

Best estimates are that 28% of the US got the Spanish flu, that would be around 28,840,000 people and 675,000 died or a death rate of 2.34% vs the covid rate of 2.80%.

Additionally, with differences in living conditions, sanitation, medical care, TRENCH WARFARE, etc, you really cannot compare 1918 with 2020.

Honored Social Butterfly

The death rate for the 1918 Spanish Flu was 0.65% vs the death rate of the Covid19 Flu IS 0.0639%.  I realize that the death toll could go up from here and most likely WILL, but that is the current statistics.  Not any way is it 2.34% or 2.8% death rate!  Get a better calculator or ask someone who knows how to calculate percentages!

nothappening:

Those numbers are an attempt by whoever you are getting them from to mislead and deceive you (by your last sentence I would say the have succeeded).  All they are doing is dividing the total number of deaths (and for the Spanish flu I believe they are using a two year death toll) into the total population, whether they were infected or not.  That is a ridiculous attempt at diversion.  By their logic, pancreatic cancer would not be a bad disease to get because such a small percentage of the total population dies from it, when it is fact fatal.  You also didn't even bother to address the differences in conditions between 1918 and 2020.

Since I gave you the actual numbers, either you didn't understand them or CAN'T work a calculator, which is it?

Sp:  Either you are just being silly or you don't know how to calculate the number of deaths based on the total population.  I will assume the latter.  Since you don't know the methodology used to measure cases in 1918 (since no test was available) it doesn't make any sense to use that for your basis.  What we know is total population and we know the number dead in each case.  So, you are just plain WRONG on all counts!

I will challenge any trump supporter who thinks that covid-19 is like the flu to go purposely expose themselves to it and tell me the same thing after they have had it (if they are able to, in actuality they may very well die from it). In reality the death rate for Covid-19 is ten times the death rate of the common flu. Arguing against this is futile because it cannot change this reality.

I never claimed that Covid19 is like the Flu.  I only corrected Sp on her defining the percent dead (Covid vs Spanish Flu).  The percent dead from Covid is still number of dead from Covid divided by the total population times 100.  No left wing rules change that!

Chasky, you have to spell it out for them.

The coronavirus death rate in the US is almost 50 times higher than that of the flu.

  • Although the flu and coronavirus have some overlapping symptoms, the coronavirus' death rate in the US is far higher.
  • On average in the US, the flu's death rate is .1%, while the coronavirus' death rate is 5.2%.
  • Both viruses are most deadly for the elderly. The flu kills .83% of infected people above age 65, whereas the coronavirus's death rate is 10.4% for infected people from age 65 to 74, 20.8% for the 75-84 group, and 30.1% for people over 85.
