At Least 7 States Set Covid Case Records

Coronavirus case increases set records in at least 7 states, prompting new restrictions
"We need to do more" to contain the spread, the mayor of Denver said. "With the holidays on the horizon, we must ... knuckle down together to do the hard work that needs to be done."

At least seven states have set new records for single-day increases in coronavirus cases, prompting some to set new restrictions as concerns mount over possible "superspreader events" during the upcoming holiday season.

Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota and West Virginia all set records Friday in the number of new cases of the virus, NBC News' tally shows.

Colorado recorded 1,312 cases Friday, the same day Denver's mayor announced both a tougher mask mandate that requires residents to wear face coverings outdoors and a limit on gatherings in "unregulated settings" to no more than five people.

“Over the past several weeks, we have worked hard to reduce our caseloads and keep hospitalizations from increasing,” Mayor Michael Hancock said in a press release. “But we need to do more. With the holidays on the horizon, we must take these additional steps over the next 30 days and knuckle down together to do the hard work that needs to be done so we can all enjoy this upcoming holiday season.”

The mask mandate remains in effect until further notice, while the limit on gatherings is through Nov. 16.

Idaho recorded 1,094 new cases Friday, while Indiana and Minnesota each reported more than 2,200 cases, according to NBC's data.

The governor of Idaho, Brad Little, said Thursday that the state was going to stay in stage 4 of his reopening plan after having failed to meet the criteria for a full reopening for the ninth time in a row, the Idaho Statesman reported.

Little urged residents to continue wearing masks and practicing social distancing.

Minnesota Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm said she was "very saddened" about the rise in cases, although she said some of it can be attributed to more testing.

“Some of the things that we maybe thought was O.K. to do a month or so ago is much, much riskier today just given this level of viral spread around our state,” she told MinnPost.

North Dakota and New Mexico also broke daily records Friday with 859 cases and 812, respectively. West Virginia and Wyoming each reported just under 500 new cases that day.

"The virus spreads when people give it the opportunity to spread, and New Mexicans are doing just that," spokeswoman Nora Meyers Sackett said.

In Wisconsin, health officials urged residents not to gather with anyone outside of their immediate families.

"I think people should think about all of the things that they're doing outside of the confines of their immediate families as a potential place that they could be coming into contact with Covid-19," said Andrea Palm, with the state's Department of Health Services. "Now is the time to make the choice not to do those things."

She added that community spread makes contact tracing difficult.

The rise in cases comes as the United States has surpassed 8 million infections and amid concern about what epidemiologists call a "third peak."

Many experts have also expressed concern that the holidays could trigger an increase in infections with gatherings of families and friends becoming "superspreader events."

Dr. Sadiya Khan, an epidemiologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told NBC News this week that as the weather gets colder more people will start to move gatherings indoors.

Dr. Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease expert at the Emory University School of Medicine, said there are "potentially six weeks of superspreader events" between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

far-righties distraction is pretty bogus - unless they now believe that 31 US States are "blue states".

The same far-righties don't seem to mind being treated like mushrooms( kept in the dark and feed manure).

As released by the House Select Committee on Covid - they forced the CDC to release the real state of play:   The number of states where COVID19 cases are rising to unacceptable limits is now 31.

The information is not released to the Public but is sent to each State.    So I suppose the far-righties could be confused when information that does not meet their expectation of lower deaths or lower case numbers - which was to be expected when the current WH regime decided that decreasing the testing would magically make the case loads drop.     Somehow Covid19 did not read the playbook of donald's and cases continue to rise and hospitals are forced to alter their money making projects to treat (and save) many of these desperately ill patients.

tRump knows that more testing will show more and more people who have contracted or have been exposed to Covid-19 and he feels that would hurt him politically. We need more testing and we need all Americans to wear a mask, two things that trump resists, even promoting that many don't wear masks. America leading the world in Covid-19 cases and 226,000 deaths are proof of tRump's mishandling of this pandemic. His incompetency has caused thousands to die needlessly.

Trump World will never hold Comrade Trump accountable for anything negative. There's always an excuse or a scapegoat to blame.

Social Butterfly

And we have Trump stupid enough to think the CDC and the Coronavirus task force work for his reelection campaign.

The pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic Toad Worshipers in those States will probably survive long enough to contaminate all the polling places which will be used mostly by other Toad Worshipers and Darwin may resolve the issue of Gerrymandering by eliminating all the GOPers in those carefully connived voting districts. Unfortunately the infected hoards of tRump will also kill tens of thousands of innocent Americans in the process.

Spreading a disease is not a constitutionally Protected Right for ANYBODY! Typhoid Mary had no idea what she was doing - the Republicans know EXACTLY what they're doing - spreading disease so their Toad doesn't have to admit he was WRONG about masks.

Lincoln weeps.

@Tom5678

Hope your test comes out negative. And where is our testing, testing, testing...and good testing, not the marginal tests!

I heard today that a 1 million plus tests were being done per day...in perspective, that would take close to a year to test the US population...and what if people needed a second or third test...that is certainly a way to “not” find out how many people have the virus.

Yep, over a million per day

You do understand that these may represent multiple test on one person.

Why people get tested and for these groups it is more than 1X.

  • they have symptoms
  • they have been exposed - regardless if they have symptoms
  • they have to do it periodically because of their job
  • they have to do it because it is a pre-requisite for something else.

This isn't about how many people have the virus; test are about identifying where it might be, where it might be going and stopping it from spreading.

Continued evidence of the inability of the Trump administration to administer the government of the United States.  No planning.  PPE shortages, higher infection rates, more deaths, and Trump is pretending we have rounded the corner.  He is also advocating Herd Immunity theories as any other approach is too hard a lift for them.

I believe he's been practicing herd immunity from the beginning.

PPE shortages, higher infection rates, more deaths...  Nothing has changed in his leadership.  Those who follow him will continue infecting themselves and others, no matter the holidays.

Biden will buckle down, begin the hard work and it will be hard.  Harder still if citizens insist they are free to do what they want.

We haven't tested anywhere near the percentage of our population as most other countries have yet we have far more cases, even per populous, than most all other countries have.

If anything what you say is that we have many times the cases that we think we have. Dang, we are doing even worse than the present numbers indicate.

All blue states?  More testing means more positives!

Honored Social Butterfly

It also CAN mean a lower percentage of positive tests...you know, one of the goals of the trump Cornavirus Task Force and that NONE of the 50 states and territories have been able to complete in the 8 months the guidelines have been released.  It's why 48 states are experiencing surges now....

Yes that's true - more testing can show less percentage of tests are positive but more testing ALWAYS shows more absolute positives!  It's always good to have more testing.

You're correct ONLY for the times when the tests are ALL negative.  This is NOT realistic.  More testing will in reality show more positive cases all the time (this is the real life scenario)!

NOTHAPPENING:   All blue states?  More testing means more positives!

That's a typical Trump strategy. He wants the virus gone so he can be reelected, he hasn't got a clue how to deal with it, so bingo!............stop looking for it and it will finally be "magically gone".  In the meanwhile, stop paying attention to the death count.

Honored Social Butterfly

The very blue states ought to pay attention to the death count since they racked more dead!

Hardly!

Some are ignoring the increase in Covid-19 cases, some deny the numbers as "fake".  Some think the second wave has started. As pointed out, this election is bringing us more super-spreader events by tRump and Pence, and with sports and schools starting, with so many in America refusing to mask themselves and practice social distancing, this second wave will be even larger than the first. This is going to get really worse than it is now.

Another shining example of Trump incompetence

Article - "... there are "potentially six weeks of superspreader events" between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

trumpled is having one of those today in Nevada.  Four more in three other states by Wednesday.  Pence and Jr. contribute three more events.  The herd is being culled.

scout - like Hitler in his final days, he has resolved to bring his country down with him - staging superspreader tRumpvid events to kill as many Americans as possible...

There can be no other motivation for his actions.  It is now impossible to concoct excuses of denial.

It looks as if the 2nd wave scientists have been predicting is starting early. One of the big areas hit is the midwest which is Trump World. That's what happens when you don't wear face masks.

Wait a second,,. @CriticalThinking, we ARE NOT turning the corner as SWAMPY DON HAS SAID or is it a matter of he is MAKING A RIGHT TURN when he should have MADE A LEFT TURN.

ToadPOTUS knows he's lost, so like Hitler in his final days, he has resolved to being his country down with him - staging superspreader tRumpvid events to kill as many Americans as possible, blocking any further aid to the bottom 90%  and making SCOTUS a judicial Fox echo chamber for the fascists and misogynists who still support him.

I just found out today that I may have been exposed as there are 5 people living in my building that do have covid, so now will probably get tested. Its cheap and easy, an djust down the street.
