A sheriff put down his baton to listen to protesters. They chanted 'walk with us,' so he did

This is AWESOME!  We need more of this...

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson spoke with demonstrators who were met by police officers in riot gear, local affiliate WEYI reported.

"The only reason we're here is to make sure that you got a voice -- that's it," Swanson said in video clips shown on Twitter.

"These cops love you -- that cop over there hugs people," he said, pointing to an officer.

He was speaking to the crowd protesting police brutality and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

He smiled and high-fived people in the crowd, who responded by chanting, "walk with us!"

So, he did.

"Let's go, let's go," Swanson said as he and the cheering crowd proceeded. "Where do you want to walk? We'll walk all night."

Montgomery County Police Officer today, kneeing in solidarity, in Germantown, MD where people were marching and demonstrating.    ❤️

The protests came to my town today.  This was taken earlier today.

Unfortunately, things apparently went south when a group started throwing rocks and bottles at passing traffic and the sheriff dept. called an unlawful assembly.

I was not out and about, still adhering to stay-in-place mandate, so I don't know what happened.

That's a shame, I hope nobody was hurt, citizens or law enforcement.

A few people got pepper-sprayed and several arrests for blocking traffic.

A similar situation happened in nearby Fredericksburg, VA.  Peaceful protests during the day and it erupted into confrontation at night.

HOWEVER, once curfew that was imposed in Fredericksburg last night was lifted, volunteers gathered to clean up and pray.

As the world kneels with us in a stand against injustice and the death of George Floyd, it is very important the message not be lost in the divisive and inflammatory rhetoric.

Another striking image of a cop in KY being protected by protesters.

Yep, I live in KY and I hear about the event in Louisville, the protesters protecting the Policeman that got separated from his unit.  There was also a protest in Bowling Green KY which was overall very peaceful.

@MsStretch  I'm sooo sorry to hear this!  I did read in your post/link that the crowd turned unruly around 9:30 pm and the police do have to do their job when that happens.  It's happening all over this country and people need to know that this rioting, looting and burning is not the solution to the problem.  If the peaceful protesters are not part of the group doing the burning and looting etc then maybe they could get together and stop the insanity of the group that is?!

Praying you all stay safe...

I can't say most cops are trying to do the right thing, but I think it's a huge number of cops who are trying to do the right thing.  The ones I know are just heartbroken that this happened.  And are every single time it happens.  Not just for the life lost, but for the additional fear there is in the community when these murders happen, regardless of where they happen.   And all the work they've done to build good community relations is just blown to hell.  And I know a lot of black cops.  Where are they left in all this?   It's a disaster.   I do hope more police show their solidarity in a way people can understand.

This was done in Camden NJ by their police as well.  Both places are mainly against Trump. Yes we need more of that, but to get more of that you have to remove the cancer causing the main problem. Trump.   Trump and Hitler the same.

Another example: Erika Shields, Atlanta police chief, walked into a crowd of protesters and listened.

---

A football player put his knee on the astroturf protesting police brutality and the president wanted to shoot the messenger by dismissing the message and vilifying the whole NFL for disrespect.  A cop put his knee on a black man's neck and the president still wants to shoot the messenger.  Some people are trying to listen in spite of the president and his "ominous guns".

I don't agree with burning cities and destroying people's personal property and livelihoods.  That's why when it comes to placing a knee, I'll support the football player with his knee on the ground before I ever will the cop with his knee on a man's neck.

@MsStretch   Yes, thank you for posting that about Atlanta!  And their Mayor is pretty awesome, as well.

We had a peaceful protest in my town in Kentucky and the police participated. It didn't make the news.

Since you were  "hoping to keep this a positive post about the good in the world", should I respond to your signature quote:  "Sadly, the liberal attack dogs have nothing but hate and anger in their hearts and spew it whenever possible."   ??????

Funny,  I have been wondering about that tag myself.

It appears that more police officers are finally understanding that they can be more effective with a kind word than with a club. I hope that this can spread and continue.

Great story.

Now we need to get Trump to "put down" his golf clubs and "listen to protesters".
