  Hi Java,

If movies are supposed to be more truthful today, then why
do they have Spider-man and Batman, along with Science Fiction,
and Horror movies.  They even have movies today, where the
hero’s characters remain living, despite impossible
odds!   This is not realism, nor closer to the truth.

I feel differently than both you and Shoman.  There
were excellent Movies shot back when Shoman, was in the
business, and are some excellent films today.   There
were also stinkers, both today and in years past.  It depends
upon the Movie Goers taste, for there is something for everyone!

I remember the critics hailed NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN  and
most of our members and those I talked to on the outside, disliked
that movie intensely!    The Critics downed a movie
like BUCKET LIST & MAMA MIA, but the Majority of the Audience
loved them.  They even clapped at the end of those
movies, and they were just in a Movie Theater.

The Critics seem to usually
endorse heavier films, while the majority of the public would
rather be entertained,.  They have enough troubles of
their own, like trying to survive!

I also feel had you
been in the business like Shoman, in that marvelous time
period, perhaps you too would feel
differently!    It's all a matter of personal
taste, and we are all entitled to our own!

Shelby, interesting swing of
thoughts in one post. You cite a couple of examples as
iron-clad proof that I’m wrong, then go on to contradict
yourself by citing what you think are good contemporaries. Then
after some talk about critics, you help me make my case
by stating, "It’s all a matter of personal taste,
and we are entitled to our own." I thought that was my point.

And BTW I am in the
business...but tend to live in the present.

Shoman dude, have you been to a
movie lately? Movies are greater than ever. Yes Hollywood isn't what
it was, it's what it is. Today's productions are more
realistic, closer to the truth, and tell it like it is. Go on out
today, buy a ticket and some popcorn and enjoy 2008;

  Hi Again Shoman,

    Yes, but when
it comes to the great novels of the past, movies were
made.  I don't usually care for remakes of those older films,
because the older movies were so very good and considered
classics!   I would prefer to see new film writers
encouraged, by producing their work.

     However,
if it comes to updating for a younger audience, to some of those
finer films, with some of their favorite actors,  I guess I
will have to live with it,  just so young people see
well written films!  Shelby

  Hi Shoman,

   Yes TURNER CLASSIC
MOVIES is very good, but the younger people have to have the
interest in seeing older film, and as you know only a certain
percentage are.  It’s people in our Generation who
appreciated TCM more, for I always loved those older movies,
except Westerns, as they were not my cup of tea.  Howerver
there are those who loved them!

Perhaps, it was simliar to the situation when our
Generation was young, and more interested in social
activities with the opposite sex, and films that were more
current. However, I was not fond of the Beach Movies, but I
did like the cute movies with SANDRA DEE.
  Remember the drive-in-theaters, they showed
"B" films, where we didn’t see much of the
movie!     Shelby

  Hi Shoman,

    I and others
of our Generation can NEVER  forget the stars of the
past, for those stars we grew up with.  You're right, it's
those stars which made Hollywood great.

Unfortunately It's the younger generation who don't know who those
stars were, unless they are the type of young people who value
older movies!    This is why we need more Film
Festivals for those stars.  Yet it would be the Art film
theater owners would consider such, especially if their theater
was in a large metropolitan area.  This way it would attract
more theater goers who would be interested!

   For instance, I
went to the CHARLIE CHAPLAN film festival in Manhattan, where I
saw the great film MODERN TIMES.  That was a film that was
extremely impressive to me, for it was well made and beyond it's
time!   Shelby

  Hi Shoman,

   Then too, there
are sometimes great actors, who are quite selective of their Movie
rolls.  Take for example GENE HACKMAN, TOM HANKS, LEONARDO DI
CAPRIO, MERYL STREEP, ROBERT DE NIRO, AL PACINO, ROBERT
REDFORD, SHAWN PENN and JODIE FOSTER.

    All of these
actors select good films to appear in, and their standards helps
to keep their careers alive and pay scale high!  So there is
still hope out there for the future of great films!  Shelby
