Hi Shoman,

     I
too think it’s wonderful that you had such experiences
in your life, which provide you with some great
memories!!!   Most movies today are simply not
memorable, for I not only forget the names of movies I forget
their shallow plots.

       Who
wouldn’t remember IMITATION OF LIFE, or DUEL IN THE
SUN?   They were terrific  m

ovies, and the greatest of
tear jerkers!

Then too what about GONE
WITH THE WIND?

 I think I cried in
that one too, as well as AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER.

Then, when it came to heavier movies, there was 12 ANGRY MEN,
THE PAWNBROKER, LUST FOR LIFE,  THEY KILL HORSES
DON'T THEY.  WOW, what acting!!!

Then there were the biblical movies, like SAMSON AND DELILAH,
and THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, or MUSICALS like "SHOW BOAT,
CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, or later on
VICTOR/VICTORIA, which was an absolute delight!

Then too, I think of the JOAN CRAWFORD, BETTE DAVIS movies,
and I always enjoyed those.  Today, I don’t even
know the names of most of the newer Movie Stars, because there
is no studio system or good PR Men, to tell them that to have
a memorable name is most  important for these actors
careers!  Changing ones name was most important years
back, and so was changing their noses!   S  helby

Although I can honestly say I envy your experiences getting to work
with some of the "Great Ones", I can't say the same about
your attitude.

I love the classic movies and the classic actors - I'd have given
anything to have been able to meet Spencer Tracy or James Cagney or a
dozen others and will always admire their work.  But there are
still excellent movies by excellent directors from excellent scripts
featuring excellent stars being made today.  Yes, there are a lot
of pointless films exploiting sex and violence but that doesn't mean
you should give up on seeking out the gems.

Even someone like Sylvester Stallone who assaulted us with another
Rambo movie made up for it with another Rocky - a movie that, although
a bit schmaltzy at times, told a wonderful tale of the human
spirit.  And can you really turn your back on films like August
Rush, The Freedom Writers, The Great Debaters or American Gangster?

Yes, American Gangster was violent, but no more people were
"killed" in that movie than in a typical western or gangster
flick in the "good old days".  The only difference is
the Hayes Commission wouldn't allow the dead people in the classics to
bleed.  And I'll pit the quality of the story against 90% of the
output of gangster movies of the 30's - remember, there were a lot
more B-movies produced back then than A-list material like White Heat
or Little Ceasar.

Anyway, all I ask is that you not be too quick to condemn everything
being made today.  The good stuff is out there - you might even
find there is an actor or two you can admire.
