didn't mention it,  I did see COCO CHANEL and I did enjoy it
even though SHIRLEY MACCLAINE couldn't put on a good French

Hi Shelby,

After my mother's
review of the movie and the critic's opinion I chose not to watch it
and deleted it from my recordings.  Maybe I'll give it a try if
it turns up again someday.  My mother thought it was
extremely boring, that Shirley Maclaine had too much pancake
make-up on and she didn't like all the flashbacks.  I too am
not one that cares for flashbacks.

Getting back to
film directors of yesterday and today I would like to mention
another director that many may not of heard about and that is Lewis
Milestone.  He directed my favorite war movie "Halls
of Montezuma" starring my favorite actor Richard
Widmark.  Some of his other great war movies include
"Pork Chop Hill" and "All Quiet on the Western
Front" for which he received the best director award.  He
also directed the original "Oceans Eleven" starring
"the Rat Pack".

Read up on
this amazing director and I think you will be surprised by the
number of great movies he has directed.  I'm sure you'll find
many of your favorites.

Hi Shelby,

Good choice.
I would have never recognized the name either but definitely know
the man's movies.  "Imitation of Life" has always
been a favorite of mine.  I enjoyed both this version and the
1934 B&W version with Claudette Colbert which was not directed
by Douglas Sirk.  Two other favorites of mine that both starred
Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman are "Magnificent Obsession" and
"All That Heaven Allows".  An interesting fact is
that out of the 20 films listed in Douglas Sirk's biography Rock
Hudson starred in 8 of them.

Two
talented brothers I would like to mention are Joel and
Ethan Coen otherwise known as "The Coen

though I didn't care for this particular movie they received Academy

picture for "No Country For Old Men" last year.  One
of my favorite movies by them is "The Man Who Wasn't

Janese, you could probably help me out on this one.  Was
it Neil Simon who directed "Same Time Next Year" and
The Goodbye Girl?"  I loved both of these flicks,
and since I am a musical person, I think Robert Wise really
did a great job with "The Sound of Music."  If
Garlon was around, he could pop off a ton of the
directors!  Oscar and Hammerstein were also greats.  Fran

Hi Fran,

Neil Simon is
actually a playwright and screenwriter not a director.
"The Goodbye Girl" was one of his screenplays and was
directed by Herbert Ross and starred Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha
Mason who was Neil's wife from 1973 - 1981.  "Same Time
Next Year" starred Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda and was directed
by Robert Mulligan.  Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the songs
for many musicals but they are not directors.  "The Sound
of Music" was their last work together and was directed by
Robert Wise.

    Hi Shelby,

on Monday as well.  I talked to my mother who watched it and
based on her word that it was very boring I deleted it.  I have
enough other movies to watch than to waste my time on that
one.  Did you watch it and if so what did you think?  I
guess the critics were right in this case.

    I think some of
the great actors like Clint and Jodie become great directors because
they have spent so many years in front of the camera that they know
what a director is looking for in a scene.  I'm sure it is much
like any job where you aspire to be something more than what you are.
