Billy Wilder for The Apartment, Some Like It Hot.
Billy was a very perceptive man, and really knew himself well enough,
to know what he didn't know - I admire him and his work
tremendously.   I adore Joe Dante, a great guy and very
talented director of Matinee,  Gremlins, among
others.   Bill Mahr is a "budding" director with
his movie "Religiosity" soon to be released.  Michael
Moore, yes - Farenheit 911, Roger and Me; Stanley Kramer, a close
personal friend of my best friend who said he was afraid of
"insects".........Judgement at Nurembourg, Mad, Mad, Mad,
Mad World (he deserved an Academy Award, just for keeping all those
comedians together in one place), Vincent Minnelli, a very perceptive,
artistic man, and talented beyond belief.  I am working on some
memoirs about directors, and the incredible work they do.

Hi Empower,

Those are all great choices as well.  Some good
movies there too.  You are right it must have been tough to
keep all those comedians together.  Here's another great director.

  Hi again Janese,

   Thank you for
mentioning RON HOWARD.  Like you, I especially
loved A BEAUTIFUL MIND, and COCOON which was filmed in our
area.   I also thought CINDERELLA MAN was
excellent.  Here is his RON HOWARD'S Biography below.

Hi Shelby,

Thanks for providing the biography for Ron
Howard.  I did not know that he was actually a distant cousin
of Don Knotts.  I loved the movie "Cinderella Man" as
well.  I thought Russell Crowe was excellent in this movie as
well as in "A Beautiful Mind".

  Hi JANESE,

    Thank you
for starting this excellent topic.   My favorites
seem to change as I'm reminded of the films they
directed.   In fact some of those films I've seen
again and again  like  "MR SMITH GOES TO
WASHINGTON" and IT"S A WONDERFUL LIFE"
which the GREAT "FRANK CAPRA" DIRECTED!

Janese, as you see, I'm not
one who thinks newer is necessarily better!  However, there
are some wonderful directors today too, like the great
Producer/Director, STEVEN SPIELBERG, and you mentioned JODY
FOSTER, and CLINT EASTWARD.  These are excellent Choices as
well, and it will be fun to discuss them in this
venue!    Shelby

Two
talented brothers I would like to mention are Joel and
Ethan Coen otherwise known as "The Coen
Brothers".  They have directed some great movies and
though I didn't care for this particular movie they received Academy
Awards for direction, best adapted screenplay and best
picture for "No Country For Old Men" last year.  One
of my favorite movies by them is "The Man Who Wasn't
There" starring Billy Bob Thornton and "O, Brother Where
Art Thou?" with George Clooney.

Who is your
favorite film director of yesterday or today and what makes his
or her films worthy of best director?  Let us know
your favorites.  Perhaps you enjoy the works of Frank
Capra or Federico Fellini or a more recent director such as
Clint Eastwood or Jodie Foster.  It is said that the
director is the most important person as he or she is
responsible for creating the "movie magic".
What movies stand out for you by your favorite?
