Why does AARP sending out "renewal" notices six months in advance?

To be fair, your "renewal" notices should clearly state that date when a membership expires.  Not to do so is deceptive.

Hi @signawaiver, I can understand your concern. Our article explains about our renewal reminders: https://aarp.info/3B7NaXe If you'd like to adjust your mailing preferences, feel free to reach out in a private message or use the "CHAT" feature. - Diana G.

Don't let AARP RIP YOU OFF. They are presently advertising a $4 reduction in the yearly membership fee ( $12 instead of $16) as long as you let them auto-renew. I called and negotiated a $9 yearly membership fee ($45 for 5 years) without auto-renewal.
