Guess what I got in the mail yesterday?
I got a ridiculous mailing from AARP touting a savings of $5.00 if I give them my credit card number so they can charge me $15 this time for my membership, $20 next time for my membership, and whatever it goes up to in the years after that.
WHY DO I CALL THIS A RIDICULOUS MAILING.....................
(1) I don't give out my credit card information to any subscription type entity because it is almost impossible to get them to stop charging your card.
(2) I negotiated, by phone, a membership fee of $9 a year for the next five years through 2030, so what made them think I was a candidate for this type of mailing.
(3) I have been a member for years and years and the above MEMBERSHIP FEE negotiation was months and months ago so the excuse that things "crossed each other in the mail" DOES NOT fly.
This is just another example of AARP'S chaos in that the left hand never knows what the right hand is doing in the organization.
Normally, that would not bother me but it is MY MEMBERSHIP FEES paying for those RIDICULOUS MAILINGS.
This misuse of OUR MEMBERSHIP FEES should be addressed by the MANAGEMENT of AARP; but it is not.
That’s what they are selling - Memberships - so I guess they have to try a bit of everything just like any other company selling something - Advertising by print, online, and by TV commercials - radio too maybe.
if it didn’t work they probably should not do it - but does it work ? ? I don’t know - not for me, it doesn’t but I don’t get much from them - in fact, most of what I see from them is in the wade of advertising that comes without my specific name on any of the assortment once every few weeks - with the Rooms To Go flyers and whatever else.
They have never been good at keeping good records on membership - at least for further updates to membership status - like who is a member, when are they up for renewal etc. Or how much they paid for their membership, that does seem to be all over the place depending upon where one may see it.
You are one member within millions and about all they know is that you are a member and since they just keep sending renewals to members whether or not the specific member is up for renewal - that may also work for them too since our memories are sometimes faltering or some don’t keep records. I would hope they would not do this but I am not so sure.
think about the way a lot of stuff is done nowadays with subscriptions - gawd, there is even a purchased service that will clean out unused subscriptions for a person. Like people don’t know where all their money goes anymore on a monthly/quarterly/annual basis - LOL.
At least AARP has not YET offered subscription membership !!
Your point is well taken - but will they change - doubt it !

Just watched an AARP multi-minute TV ad that must've cost $$$$$ of our membership fees. It wasn't a local commercial but a national one. So they waste money on mailing members redundant membership advertising and they also spend untold amounts of money on TV ads. Someone needs to investigate this.
