More information to look at. If you go to a Discussion Forum, below the Trending Topics you will find a list of the Sub Forums. See example image below. Click on, tap or activate image to enlarge it.

Great response unless AARP cyber cops have shut you down (as they have me). Then you can only post replies, subject to their monitoring. syn...

@BarkleyHound,

You stopped too soon.

Select a discussion board from the list on the right like you had done. You had selected technology.

You then have another step. Once you select technology, you will get the subcategories of that discussion board.  For Technology, one is "computer tips..." and the other is "about our community".

Click on the subcategory of the subject you wish to start a discussion in... for example "about our community". Once you click on that, you will see the trending topics for that subcategory and a tab above those trending topics that says "Start a Topic".

Click on "Start a Topic" and you are on your way.

I can not figure how to get a "start a topic" link other than this category.

Here is the "how to post a message" help.

To post a message:

Go to the board where you want to post.
    Click the New Message link.
In the Subject field, enter your message title.
Tip: Make your subject clear and concise, as it's the only part of the message that shows up on the message-listing page.
In the Body field, type your message. Be sure to include all necessary details, especially for technical topics.
Format and spell check your message, as needed.
    Click Submit Post.

I go to community.aarp.org.
I click on "discussion > technology".
The page returned is the trending topics for "communuty > technology".
There is no "new message" or "start a topic" link anywhere on the page.

The only way I can get "start a topic" is by clicking "introduce yourself". The problem is that is not the catgegory I want.

I am using Firefox 53.0.3
