Can you please help me understand why the AARP Community guidelines were updated?

The latest Community Guidelines changes are intended to set expectations for our community members and foster more civil conversations. Some of the issues discussed in these communities – including healthcare, retirement, and politics – are serious and can stir up strong emotions. We should have spirited debates about all of them, but those debates should always be respectful, on-topic and fact-based. We will be applying those standards in our online communities as we work together, with all of you, to address the challenges that face older Americans.

To ensure that AARP’s interactive spaces are inviting, civil, and provide an important and valuable interactive experience for everyone, we need to periodically review and update our community guidelines. Changes made to our guidelines and the community will continue to reflect the core values of AARP and encourage positive interactions as we address the challenges of Americans 50 and older.
