Scoring in Mahjongg Toy Chest

Can anyone explain the scoring system for Mahjongg Toy Chest?  I don't understand why I sometimes get more points for a game I've "lost" than for one I've "won."  What gives??

Speed multipliers are added if you make moves in fast succession. Maybe, the games you “lost” actually had good first and/or second rounds Where you made moves quickly enough to apply multipliers to your score.

for instance, I have noticed with Mahjongg Dimensions that the multiplier goes as high as 32 just in the first round if I blast through it and hit all possible bonuses.

not 100% sure...but pretty close....
