As far as I know, you can't. This is not named Tetra which you and I may prefer. The best strategy I've found is to keep filling lines to gain more space and avoid placing parts that leave only one open square. There are single squares but they are rare. Plus, I think the game is clever with the parts it gives you the longer you play.
