@Rhymesometimes You are probably very close to the truth. It wasn’t long after Abbey Road that they did split up.

I always remembered the crazy conspiracy theory, rumored across every college campus in the late 60’s that Paul McCartney had died and been replaced with a lookalike.

And if you needed proof just look at the Abbey Road Album cover, John was dressed in white as a religious figure, Ringo in black was the undertaker, George in denim was the grave digger.

Paul was barefooted (they never bury you with your boots on, right?), he was also out of step with the rest of the band and holding a cigarette in his right hand signifying he was an imposter (Paul was left-handed), and the Volkswagen parked on the street had the plate number 28IF, meaning Paul would have been “28 If” he had lived.

Of all the infamous "Paul is dead" rumor clues, thanks to Yoko idea playing the first 40 seconds of Revolution number 9   backwards sounds like “turn me on dead man”.  At 19 years old it sure gave me goosebumps.

Also, the look-a-like was supposedly a Scot named William Campbell, who had won a Paul McCartney look-a-like contest. The Sgt. Pepper’s Lonelyhearts Club Band album cover had clues—on the front, the floral arrangement is a leftie’s guitar and the crowd is attending Paul’s funeral. On the back, Paul has his back to the camera, while the other three Beatles are facing forward. Magical Mystery Tour: Paul is wearing a uniform with an arm patch that says “OPD”—“officially pronounced dead”. (Actually, it stood for “Ontario Police Department”.) In the ballroom scene, the other three Beatles have red boutonnières; Paul’s is black. At the end of one song (can’t remember which), John is heard saying “I buried Paul” in a spooky voice; nope—he really said, “Cranberry sauce.” Abbey Road: “Come Together” over Paul’s dead body, and the lyric “one and one and one is three/got to be good lookin’ ‘cause he’s so hard to see” is obviously saying that only three Beatles are left, and the “Cute Beatle” will be seen no more.

The whole thing started with a bored American DJ, and erupted from there. Everybody was scrutinizing album covers, analyzing lyrics, and manually rotating records backward with an ear next to the needle. Great fun.
