Absolutely a burning question for Veterans....how do I choose which organization to join or IF I should join any .... The 2017 (most current version)  https://www.va.gov/vso/VSO-Directory.pdf

VETERANS AND MILITARY SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS DIRECTORY posted on Department of Veterans Affairs website lists 4 catagories of organizations as follows.

31 - Congressionally Chartered that are also recognized by the VA to assist Veterans in the claims process

11 - Congressionally Chartered and NOT recognized by the VA for claims assistance

3 - Not Congressionally Charted but ARE recognized by the VA for claims assistance

74 - Not Congressionally Chartered or recognized by the VA for claims assistance but DO Represent the interest of Veterans

The American Legion supports education !

One of the premier American Legion programs – combining youth and a love of country – will take place this weekend in Indianapolis. And three young people will leave with well-deserved scholarships totaling $48,000.

I’m proud that The American Legion runs the constitutional speech contest – better known as the 77th Annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. During each round, each competitor will demonstrate his or her constitutional knowledge and speaking ability by delivering a rehearsed 8- to 10-minute oration and a randomly selected 3- to 5-minute oration on a constitutional topic.

I admire the 53 contestants - representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and France - who will present their speeches in front of a live audience without the benefit of note cards. They will compete for scholarships as the quarterfinals kick off Saturday morning. That afternoon, nine contestants will compete in the semifinals, vying for three spots in the finals.

On Sunday morning, the finals begin at 10 a.m. (EDT). If you are unable to see the event in person in Indianapolis, I encourage you to view the finals during the live webcast at www.legiontv.org . Stories recapping the semifinal and final rounds will be published on www.legion.org after their conclusions.
