AARP, Vatican Open Historic Summit on Global Aging and Brain Health
CEO Myechia Minter-Jordan to deliver opening remarks in Rome.
By Deirdre van Dyk, AARP. Published May 08, 2025.
Francis made protecting older adults part of his mission during his time leading the Catholic Church. He encouraged others to treat older members of society with dignity and worried about the loneliness epidemic faced by aging people around the world. โThe โoldestโ are the firm foundation on which โnewโ stones can rest,โ he wrote in his message on World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly last year.
Before his death last month at the age of 88, Pope Francis had planned to attend a conference convened by the Vatican and sponsored by AARP to address global aging issues, brain health and caregiving. Now, as cardinals from around the world convened to elect the next Pope, that event, โThe Memory: A Symposium Addressing the Opportunities and Challenges of an Aging Global Population,โ will continue Pope Francisโs legacy. The symposium will be held May 9-10 in Rome, the same city that is the center of international interest as the first American Pope, Cardinal Robert Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, was named as the successor to Pope Francis.
