Just as it can damage your skin, the sun can do a number on your eyes. Among other things, ultraviolet (UV) rays can increase your chances of contracting debilitating conditions like cataracts and even cancer.
โI can honestly tell when somebody was born and raised in Florida [and] when they werenโt,โ says Kimberly Caracci, an optometrist at the Cleveland Clinic Florida. She explains that she can tell apart her patients who spent years in the Florida sun just by the damage it did to their eyes.

Up to age 16, living in Jamaica West Indies, I spent hours swimming in the ocean without sun protection or sunglasses.
I guess it was a good thing we moved back to the states BEFORE I ended up with cancer.
Now I am sure, any American working there like my dad did (now deceased) are well AWARE of the damage the sun can do.
Now at age 67, lol - I RUN from the sun and have to wear my prescription sunglasses. I have run across folks who can see WITHOUT sunglasses on those days you are hit with it in front of you. Not me!!!
Take care,
