best way to do squats

After I suffered through painful achilles tendonitis twice and then sprained my ankle, my dr. prescribed physical therapy.  My PT taught me a less painful way to squat than I learned from a personal trainer.  Just one change made a difference for me to be able to do squats without hurting my bad knees.  She taught me to bend at my hips and reach back with my bottom as I brought my chest to my thighs.  Thrusting my bottom out made all the difference.  This is not mentioned in the description for squats on p. 20 of the current issue.
