DES Info: A US physician speaks out on how DES was the standard of care

There is no doubt that DES is a hazardous drug, but it is not appropriate to hold the drug companies or the physicians responsible, much as the attorneys would like to do.

As someone who was in OB practice back then, I can tell you that DES was roundly touted by the most reputable authorities as being the best hope for preventing miscarriage. Prescribing it was very much the standard of care at the time. It was only quite a bit later that it was determined not only to be ineffective, but also dangerous.

Unfortunately, the lack of knowledge of the physicians helped create The DES Tragedy. Yes, pharmaceutical reps visited you…. But it is a physician responsibility to review relative studies to provide the best care and this DES standard of care caused a multigenerational tragedy
