Well where can I find the VALID REASONS not to have them.Especially as I have already had the Arthroscopy on my right knee and a knee replacment on my right knee in 2003 and I had a total hysterectomy for uterine fibroids in 1999, and my neuroguregoen is recommendinh spinal fusion of at least one disk due to a Ruptured disk L4-L5 with spinal stenosis and neural compression of the left sciatic nerve from the piriformis all the way down to my toes. Plus the same thing that happened to my right is now happening to my left leg. So that makes three surguries on the list. Comments and responses.

I had one done two weeks ago. I am walking up the stairs without pain, and doing pretty good. The big problem is not being able to do the things I want to do for four more weeks, and getting off pain pills. I still have some pain of course, and wear a brace for a month, but I think I am lucky. Actually, I guess I feel a bit down from not being able to go foreward. It takes time to heal which is hard for me.

Get a good doc and you won't even know you've had surgery.

Just to confuse readers, I did have the fusion surgery in 1997, and it not only changed my life enormously, it allowed me to enjoy  that life again.  I had #3,4, and 5 vertebrae fused, and went from barely being able to walk, to becoming an avid cyclist since that time.  I have not had significant back pain (or knee ) for that matter for almost 17years.  I cannot run anymore, but then cycling is a lot more fun as far as I'm concerned and not nearly as debilitating.

I believe one's choice of Dr. is crucial here.  I had this done at a top hospital in Boston, and after asking many people for suggestions, wound up receiving the same doctor's name from 3 different sources.  I do not know if the doctor is still practicing; his name is Dr. Fred Mansfield and he was practicing at Mass General Hospital.

I had the spinal fusion on May 22, 2014 and I couldn't have made a better choice.  Dr. Freudenberger in Huntsville, AL did mine and everything has been perfect.  My fusion was at C6 and C7 in the neck and the surgery was called Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF).

I don't know where the author or this article got their information.
