Eligible owners of iPhones and other devices with Apple’s voice activated digital assistant Siri may ask that question now that a Northern California federal judge gave preliminary approval earlier this week for a $95 million class action settlement between the company and users, who claimed their privacy was violated.

The legal dispute has lasted more than five years. The lawsuit alleges that Siri, without a person’s consent, recorded private and confidential conversations and shared those conversations with third parties who transcribed the audio to improve Apple’s dictation.
