I've used both Open Office and Libre Office. In my experience they will both open documents saved as Word files. Generally speaking, the less fancy formatting in the original Word document, the better job they do of opening it. In other words Open Office should at least try to open it. If it is mostly straight-forward text and not loaded up with a bunch of Tables, Images and fancy formatting, it'll probably do a good job.
