Using Word

Hi. I am trying to get a document into a Word format. I do not have Word on my puter, I have Open Office and 2 questions    If I go to my friend's house and use Word on their puter to type it and then attach it to an email to me, will my puter open it without having Word on it as a program ?   Or I could just buy Word and put it on my puter. I can afford to do that.  Do you have suggestions ? If I want to buy it and put it on my puter, where do I go and will there be any hangups using it ? Thank you, Wendy in Oregon, a retired elem teacher

Hi Wendy @zaneyzelda1 ,

I've used both Open Office and Libre Office.  In my experience they will both open documents saved as Word files.  Generally speaking, the less fancy formatting in the original Word document, the better job they do of opening it. In other words Open Office should at least try to open it.  If it is mostly straight-forward text and not loaded up with a bunch of Tables, Images and fancy formatting, it'll probably do a good job.

Hi, Zelda!

I use Open Office as well; click File > Save As > select Microsoft Word. Here's the Apache article with important details:
