Re: Suggestions for a new computer for 96 year old - with visual concerns

If your in-law can see large screen tv, plug any Windows computer into the HDMI port, and if he needs more/bigger fonts go with the accessiblity pack - narrator, magnifier, high contrast features. Using the same connectors and cables that are used for DVD/CD/Cable boxes etc. into the TV.

It's worked for a soon to be Boston post cane recipient in my area, she's a mere 99.

Extent of visual impairment would be required for any other suggestions, I'm afraid.

Yes, even most mac's allow and have an hdmi port for plugging in Digital tv's for use as monitors.

Braille readers are made for both types of computers.

If your in-law has prior use with either type it's best to stay with what he's familiar with.

I have noticed advertisments for a computer for seniors in various papers.  It's supposed to be set

up with a much simpler set-up to get to the common areas (email, etc).and be easier to navigate.  If I were you i believe I'd chec this one out before I bought anythig.  .

I used to have both Ox and macs.  After Windows 7 came out; you had to have Internet access for Closed Captioning.  So no more Windows

itvis slightly better now with Windows 10 but still some need

so I tell folks to get Macs- best for Disabled people.

Problem is, more expensive than pcs but so worth it.

Find out what all he wants to do on it then find a computer that will meet his requirements.

If the computer has Windows 10 then it will have the Ease of Access app. See image below.

You can look at this, http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17180 , to see more information on Windows Ease of Access.

You may want to look at this You Tube video too.
