Patrick Dempsey Recalls the โTremendous Stressโ of Being a Caregiver for His Late Mother.
โGreyโs Anatomyโ star says caregivers need more support: โThereโs sometimes when youโre just not strongโ.
By Andre Ellington, AARP. Published June 24, 2025.
Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey, 59, recently shared his journey as a caregiver for his late mother, Amanda Dempsey, who battled ovarian cancer for 17 years. โโโIn my motherโs case, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the late 90s,โ Dempsey said in an Instagram video. โThen over the next 14 years, she would have 12 reoccurrences, so it had a profound impact on our family, and everybody in the family handles it differently. โโโItโs important to identify the strengths of the family and weaknesses of the family and then build the support group around that.โ โ
The Ferrari actor then said that while his sister, who worked in a hospital, handled the โday-to-day conversationsโ with nurses and doctors, he was responsible for giving his mother various โprojectsโ to keep her mind and body active. โโโI would pick up the slack by giving my mom a project at the house,โ Dempsey continued. โShe wanted to stay active, and I think thatโs the same for a caregiver. You want to keep that routine going, and you want to [put] your team in place that can help support you."

Thank you AARP for publishing this article & Patrick for sharing your journey. I am hoping it will ENCOURAGE the Medical Field to realize we women still NEED our gyn exams. So sad SO MANY women have lost their battle with this sometimes SILENT disease.
Once we get to age 65, it is like we NO longer need these exams.
Personally at age 67, I will find out July 24th "hopefully" IF I have it or some OTHER issue. With our PELVIC AREA full of so many organs, anyone of them can have an "issue". I am HOPING it is something "fixable" as my only child will NOT have any family support during my years of "possibly" needing care.
Women, please PAY ATTENTION to your bodies NO matter how "inconvenient" it maybe to get tested.
Lol, went through the urine samples, blood tests, antibiotics = still tiny red blood cells in urine of which I cannot see. Anyway, GRATEFUL my wonderful MALE doctor has referred me for this testing. He wants to make sure whatever is causing this is benign. Thank you Dr. Billups!
