If you have not bought any I-Bonds yet, there is about two weeks left in October 2022 to capture the 9.62% interest for 6 months. You need to buy before October 31, 2022. My suggestion is to buy by Thursday, October 27, 2022, and not wait until the last minute. The BLS released the CPI statistics today and the next 6 month rate will be 6.48%. So, if you buy an I-Bond (maximum $10,000 single $20,000 married) by October 27, 2022,you will earn 9.62% for 6 months, October 2022 thru March 2023, (interest starts the beginning of the month of purchase) and 6.48% for the next 6 months, April 2023 thru September 2023. This is an average of about 8% for the 1 year period. This is greater than any CD interest rates and I-Bond interest is tax deferred until you redeem the I-Bond. You must hold the I-Bond for at least 1 year and may hold them as long as 30 years. I-Bond interest is not taxable by your State which is an advantage over CDs. You can obtain more information at treasurydirect.gov which is where you purchase I-Bonds.
@GailL1 I saw an article that the Treasury sold over $1 Billion I - Bonds in October. This could be a best guess by the author. I am not sure the Treasury can produce data this quick. Who knows? With regard to this Online Community, I think the symbol that looks like an eye informs us that just over 400 folks viewed this posting.
I have read many articles on I - Bonds; and, believe it or not, some articles were negative on the I - Bond even though folks who bought I - Bonds before November 1st will receive about 8% for the full 12 month period without equity and/or bond market risk. Am I missing something?
