The Power of Music

If you want to do something good for your brain, turn on your music player and sing along to a few songs. Better yet, sing and dance at the same time. Music stimulates many areas of the brain, including those responsible for memory, movement and mood, according to a new report from the AARP-founded Global Council on Brain Health (GCBH).

I've always loved music. My parents have home videos of me as a wee baby, and I'm intently listening to the music playing and ignoring everything else going on. I've been singing since I can remember, and I took piano lessons for a time and played the flute for 6 years. I also recently learned that my great-grandmother was an opera singer! My grandma on my mom's side was a piano teacher. Music is in my genes! Music has also helped me process my feelings, and is always there to soothe my soul when I'm going through a rough patch. I even met my partner at a music festival!

THEME FROM:    OUT OF AFRICA

From the first note I start to cry.  I am taken through many emotions.  My LOVE of Africa, An incredible Love Story, Utter Beauty, my Profound Love of Animals and Earth.      To have notes of music strung in such a way that I am gifted a range of emotions.  A range of memories.  We are so blessed to have Music.

I always feel good when I hear "Well All Right" by Blind Faith (1969). It was also recorded by Buddy Holly (1958) and Santana (2005?).

Now I often listen to anything by Playing for Change, especially the international collaborations called "Songs Around the World." If you are listening for the first time, start with "Stand By Me" or "Imagine." Both, and much more, on YouTube.

The National Anthem always brings tears to my eyes. Every time, we have many people in our family who have fought for this countyโ€™s freedom. From the Revolutionary war, WW I, WW ll, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, Iraq and a niece, and nephew currently serving now. We have Army, Navy, Coast Guard , and National Guard are the ones I am aware of in my life time. It always makes me feel proud and thankful to be an American. Nobody cared what their political affiliation was. Ask anyone who served or is serving now if they care when they are in the heat of battle what race, religion or political party they are. Letโ€™s play that anthem regularly, if not for each other...for the people who risk their lives everyday no matter how we civilians behave.
