Rental car insurance

I recently discovered rental car LDW is no longer part of most credit cards (it had been on previous personal as well as work issued cards...) Adding the options for coverage at the counter seems pricey -- almost doubling my rental price.  My personal auto insurance will cover damage/loss (subject to my deductible) but my agent 'warned' me of rental companies adding fees for their loss of use of the vehicle (not covered by my insurance).  I did confirm this possibilities in the fine print of a Budget rental agreement.  Any other options used/liked by others?
