Dennys and AARP ripoff

So AARP and Dennys claim you receive a 15% discount off your check. Well I beg to differ, this morning my meal was 28.41, so my discount should have been 4.22. I received 1.29 discount. When I complained to the manager, she stated we ordered a grand slam and they are already discounted? This is a constant ripoff to get AARP members in the restaurant and then they do not honor the discount. Neither Dennys or AARP will do anything to resolve this issue, so I would simply suggest cancelling the AARP and not visiting Dennys at all. We constantly get overpriced mailers from New York Life and The Hartford. They are not offering any discounts or cheaper prices. It seems AARP is simply taking money to offer an advertising venue for numerous firms with no actual savings for members!

I've had similar issues every time I go to Denny's. Today, I noticed in fine print the item I was considering ordering was not eligible for the 15% AARP discount. I ordered something else that did not include the disclaimer. When I paid, I was told my menu items were not eligible for the AARP sicount. Total rip off!! AARP needs to take Denny's off their discount partnership.

@dianamayfield I'm so sorry for any frustration this has caused. The Denny's discount excludes alcoholic beverages, Everyday Value Slam, Super Slam, merchandise, gift cards, and orders made online. It is not stackable or combinable with Original Grand Slam promotions or any other offers or promotions. You can view the disclosures here: https://www.aarp.org/membership/benefits/restaurants/dennys/ ?cmp=SNO-LITHIUM---&socialid=14868291572; - Janelle M.

@dianamayfield

The program also stipulates โ€œat participating restaurantsโ€ - so it sounds like you have to go loaded with all the info to get it to apply to whatever -

Eh....I tried Dennys for breakfast one early morning and got the Lumberjack giant breakfast.  Got the AARP discount,  but also got sick from the food about an hour later and was thirsty for nearly 2 days.   I gave them another try for dinner and got one of their burgers and received my special AARP discount,  but got sick about 2 hours later.... the burger had a very peculiar and gamey taste.   I don't like pan fried burgers.   I will not go there again and the place is filthy dirty. Going back to the nice diners in my area and pay a little more. I don't understand why AARP loves Dennys so much....ugh!

The Anchorage Alaska Dennyโ€™s wonโ€™t honor the discount at all. They say โ€œWe donโ€™t honor any of the Lower 48 discounts except the military discount.โ€ I no longer go there.

@ke6143

Guess thatโ€™s why the AARP - DENNYโ€™S discount specifies . . . AT PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS.

Wonder if there is a sign to specify one way or the other - anywhere?

I did not see a sign posted and when I was informed at check-out they didnโ€™t point one out either. Need to ask upon arrival or call ahead. Not sure when they stopped participating, they used to.

Seems you did get exactly what was covered in the discount -

You have to read the small print on all discounts and special offers - sometimes the small, small, small print too -  This is true for most all discounts and special offers no matter who is offering them.  Always read the โ€œdetailsโ€.

The irony is that AARP is for seniors, most over 55 or whatever the minimum age is. I know I need my glasses to read the fine print in well-lit areas and sometimes a magnifying glass may be needed because the fine, fine print is that tiny, too tiny for most senior citizens! ๐Ÿคฏ

@MichaelA54029

Maybe that would be something that Congress should take upon itself -

ANY IMPORTANT INFO PRINTED FOR THE CONSUMER NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST SO BIG IT CAN BE READ REASONABLY.

This should go for anything, anyplace - contracts, TV ads, disclaimers, etc.

So simple on so many issues.

Read the terms and conditions folks.

I use my AARP often and many Denny's across the South and never had an issue.

Dennyโ€™s is now only owned by franchicees. No corporate locations anymore.  Consequently, Dennyโ€™s locations changed the โ€œ rulesโ€ to make more money with no grief from corporate.  That is their peroggative, however, the change should have been posted in the lobbies.  What normal person is going to check the small print every time they want to visit!
