Avis Car Rental

Recently went to Las Vegas.  Used the AARP travel site to reserve my car.  Contacted my insurance company to see if I was covered for the rental to avoid paying their insurance.  Arrived to Vegas and went to car rental location and checked in with Avis to make sure they had my reservation.  Talked to the rep and said I needed to add my brother as a driver.  He told me the price and said just come back when he arrives.  So, when my brother arrived we went back to the Avis counter and a different representative.  Added my brother as a driver.  The second rep asked if the first rep explained insurance coverage because I used AARP to reserve my car.  She said that my insurance would not take affect until I paid $5,000 out of pocket before my auto insurance what take affect.  It would also not cover the car if it was out of service and we would have to pay a daily fee. The options were to pay $190 for their insurance, take the chance we were not in an accident and hopefully they were wrong and our insurance would cover.  We paid the $190. Ripoff.

  I just rented through AVIS with AARP, yesterday the rate was $504, today $529 but the agent told me my creditcard is not going through even though I got charge on my card Are these really AARP agents???...sent me to avis at the Ft Lauderdale airport to reserve and now the price is $599! I just paid $599 and now I am worried about the insurance coverage....this is a joke. AARP needs to fix this.

We had a similar experience with Hertz. It was paid for in our travel package, but when we went to pick up the car late because of a delayed flight. We were told that we had to give our credit card and sign for incidentals. We asked if the insurance they had listed was the insurance that we paid for already. The clerk said we‘ll see and charged us for $660.00 insurance that we did not want or need. When we got home we found a 860.00 charge from Hertz and trying to get it fixed has been impossible. Also when we checked yelp we found out that it is standard for them to charge an extra $660.00 for either insurance or damages that were there when the car is dropped off at their return site. My advice is don’t sign anything at the pickup site and video tape what the car looked like when picked up and dropped off before leaving the car. It is a shame that a big car rental company needs to rip people off instead of doing honest business with customers.
