Nellie Sattler was my grandmother. She survived the homebirths of 10 children. She was a hard-working mother, she even took me to work with her once.  She had lesbian friends when that wasn't even mentioned. She didn't care what color you were, you were always welcome at her house.  She didn't gossip or listen to it about anyone. I never saw her in church unless it was for a wedding and she smoked unfiltered Marlboros. The most amazing thing about her was that she accepted everyone, invited them in to eat and always listened. I learned to accept from her. I learned how to show love from her. When I was 14 and going through teen angst, she would sit in a rocker on her porch and rock me. Her rocking cured me of everything and anything. Thank you, Mamaw.
