Bernard Schley Payne was born in 1903 in West Virginia.  He was orphaned at the age of 6 years.  He and two younger brothers were sent to live with an aunt who was very mean to them.  My father was treated more like a servant and at the age of 13 ran away from home.  He tried to care for his brothers but eventually had to put them in a home.  He worked several different jobs to try to make ends meet.  Later on another aunt helped him go to Ohio State University, in journalism.  Unfortunately, he was unable to graduate.  As a young man, he joined Rotary and became the youngest Rotary Governor in the State of West Virginia.  He met and married my mother, Erie Reynolds.  I was so fortunate to be raised by two wonderful parents!
