The Big Sable Point Light is a lighthouse on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan near Ludington in Mason County, Michigan, at the Ludington State Park. It is an active aid to navigation.
Built in 1867, the 112-foot (34 m) tower was originally made of yellow cream brick. The brick deteriorated and was thereafter covered with boiler plate in 1900.
Construction materials were brought up by ships. The first road to the site was not completed until 1933..Currently, the tower is painted white with a black watch tower and a black band around the middle of the tower. As shown in a historic post card, it was painted red and white at one time; later to become black and white.
The original lens was a third order Fresnel lens. It was removed in 1985, and is now on display at the Rose Hawley Museum at White Pine Village.
After the light was automated, the keeper's house was severely vandalized.
The site is the subject of constant erosion, so that keeping the foundation in place and the water away from undermining it has been a recurrent and expensive battle.
Photo therealchrispagan📷

❤ Lion's (Faux) Lighthouse For Sight, Long Beach, California 2013

The Lion's Lighthouse for Sight was dedicated on December 2000. The 65 foot metal tower is a symbol of the Lion's fundraiser activities for the visually impaired. Owned by the U. S. Coastguard. The harbormaster's office is at the base of the tower. 2000. Active (privately maintained and unofficial); focal plane 105 ft (32 m); continuous white light. 65 ft (20 m) steel tower with harbor master's office in the base. Lighthouse painted white, gallery black, lantern red. 40% of the funding for the lighthouse was raised by the Long Beach Downtown Lions Club, and the lighthouse is known as the Lions Lighthouse for Sight. The lighthouse was dedicated on 10 December 2000. It's called the Rainbow Lighthouse because it is floodlit at night in varying colors. Located just to the east of the Aquarium of the Pacific on the north side of the entrance to Long Beach harbor and the west side of the small boat basin.

The Fresnel Lens:

The heart of a lighthouse!

In the 1700 and 1800’s open water shipping was the lifeline of commerce – it was the only way to transport goods between the continents, but it wasn’t easy. Among the many difficulties was the problem of ships, and all of their precious cargo running aground and being smashed on unseen rocks.

This necessity brought about the creation and design of many lighthouses on the coastlines, which would let ocean navigators see when they were getting too close to dangerous outcrops. The issue was, the lights were essentially a large candle or oil lamp, and many times they were so dim that when the boat Captain saw the light, it was already too late. So scientists of the day searched for ways to focus and project the light much further.

French physicist and engineer Augustin-Jean Fresnel developed the multi-part Fresnel lens for use in lighthouses. His design allowed for the construction of lenses of large aperture and short focal length, without the mass and volume of material that would be required by a lens of conventional design. A Fresnel lens can be made much thinner than a comparable conventional lens, in some cases taking the form of a flat sheet. A Fresnel lens can also capture more oblique light from a light source, thus allowing the light from a lighthouse equipped with one, to be visible over greater distances.
