@s809426o wrote:

You make it sound like it is easy to change Medigap coverage or who covers it. If you really did any research you will know that you only have the right to get coverage without examination on your initial inrollment. After that if you try to change, the insurance company has the right to deny or raise your rate based on your health. So to say just change coverage because you are not happy with the insurance company is not easy or even possible for alot of seniors. I found this out and did my due diligence and made my decision based on alot of factors including the fact that AARP endorsed it. If you look up Medigap programs this one is called "AARP United Health Care Medigap". I thought at the time when I made my selection that AARP would endorse the best for seniors, not have a company that builds up clients based on extras and then drops them after many can not change insurance companie easily or at all. "Extras" and trust count when you are making up your mind. All insurance companies have to follow the "Requirements" of Medicare. It can be the extras that make the difference.

Either you are not on medigap or you are one of the fortunate that can change medigap programs because of excellent health or are not aware of the restrictions that caused by trying to change programs after the initial windows. The open window every year allows you to change but it does say any company can not deny or raise your rates if you try.

If you are saying the AARP endorsed Unitited Health Care because they follow the required guidelines of Medicare, then that applies to all insurance companies So the endorsement is worthless. You are quite wrong if you think that an endorsement from AARP is not powerfull. One of the main reasons you would select AARP is because you trust that they doing the best for seniors. Why would you belong to the organization if it were not.

So based on what you are saying, all products that are endorsed by AARP are not really checked by AARP and probably not the best for seniors. If this is the case and you believe it, why are you a member? Just for the discounts? Which are no better then AAA. I would hope that you belong to AARP because it is an organization that is there to help seniors, not to sell to them.

The ease of changing a Medigap plan to a different insurer or a different plan - as long as it is equal to or less in plan design is largely up to a state. As an example -several States have a birthday rule where it is easy to change yearly without underwriting.

Medigap plans have to cover specifics as defined by traditional (Original) Medicare and the plan design - those are the actual benefits. Anything "extra" like some dental or vision coverage or a health and wellness program are not mandated by Medicare and do not affect the plans mandated coverage. Read your plan - it should say something about these "extra" benefits like this (a disclosure) These are additional insured member services apart from the AARP Medicare Supplement Plan benefits, are not insurance programs, are subject to geographical availability, and may be discontinued at any time.

What I am saying is I do not consider a "name royalty" as an endorsement for ANY benefit - I pick any benefit based on what I need and then I look for the best place to fill that need. Yes, I think that people are interpreting this "name royalty" erroneously - the AARP may endorse whatever benefits they want (Actually it is done by AARP Services, Inc.) but they are not the insurer and that is all left to the insurer - you sign the insurers contract of insurance coverage. Look at all the AARP Insurance Disclosures:

https://advantages.aarp.org/en/about-us/insurance-disclosures.html

Providers pay a royalty fee to AARP for use of the AARP intellectual property. Developing public policy recommendations that serve such diversity is a formidable task. We concentrate on the issues most important to those in the 50+ community as they age: economic security; health care; access to affordable, quality long-term care; creating and maintaining livable communities; consumer protections; caregiving; and ensuring that our democracy works better for all.

I support this mission and most of their policies - I think they do some good work under the arm of the AARP Foundation.

I am no longer a member and just come here on many different boards to try to help educate people on current events that may concern them, and educate them on certain subjects with links to guide them in their own investigations. I enjoy debating on the Politics and Current Events board. You do not need to be a member to participate here.

I haven't used any of the discounts since I was a member - think I might have used the hotel discount a few times way back when I was traveling more. Think you have to use your card to ID you as a member of which I do not have any longer.

I can only assume that my monthly fees will reduce by the amount of the current gym monthly charges.

I also hope they get enough response from members to reverse this decision, this is really good program and it would be a shame to not have it for the okder folks.

I just joined AARP and bought United HealthCare for one reason: to get the Silver Sneakers program. I had done my homework thoroughly and asked all the right questions and gotten the right answers. I got mountains of rmaterial in the mail including a slick publication telling me how to enroll in Silver Snerakers. When I tried I was told online that I was ineligible. I called and was advised they have terminated the program in Kentucky because not enough people used it.

Needless to say I am VERY irritated with both AARP and UNITED HEALTHCARE. I have been lied to. They would have know this when I was enrolling. Shame on you AARP. Make this right for your members.

The Silver Sneakers program was also discontinued in Ohio by United Healthcare effective 1/1/2019. I've used this program religiously in the five years I've been eligible for Medicare and consider it the most important benefit of my supplemental insurance, second to the medical coverage itself. Why discontinue a program that allows us seniors a wonderfully cost effective way to take care of ourselves by joining our local health club or YMCA for free? It seems to me that discontinuing this program will result in increased healthcare costs for the insurance companies. I would expect AARP to push back severely to United Healthcare if AARP really cares about senior health. Does anyone from AARP read these posts?

I,too, am very unhappy about losing Silver Sneakers under the AARP United Health Plan and, after calling the insurance company, feel that I have NO ALTERNATIVE but to change plans. I trusted this plan because AARP was willing to put their name on it and now I find the organization is not as concerned about senior health as I thought. When I called United Health they said “most companies are dropping Silver Sneaker, for many reasons”. My assumption is that it all boils down to $$$! The only gym in our area of coastal California, offering the United Health Care plan of service, is very small and has no pool. Very sad and disappointed AARP! Please DO SOMETHING!

Please, please do not discontinue Silver Sneakers. With all the talk from AARP about keeping fit and healthy as you age this is such a vital program. Most of us on fixed incomes can not afford to pay for Membership to a health club. I hope those who have a say will reconsider this choice. Some things are more important than the dollar!!!

I agree with you completely. I chose this plan specifically because it offered Silver Sneakers. My doctor had recommended a water excercise program for me. I have been coming to the classes for awhile now and they have done amazing things for my back. I don't want to lose this and I don't think that there is another facility in the area where I can swim at a reasonable price. This is a BAD decision on the part of United Health Care/AARP!!!!

This is very disappointing. There must be other health plans still offering Silver Sneakers in 2019. Unfortunately the Silver Sneakers website isn't up-to-date on this issue as they still list United Health from AARP as a Silver Sneakers provider!

Update: ‎10-30-2018 03:20 PM
Anthem Blue Cross' (Innovative) Plan F in California includes Silver Sneakers in 2019, but (rates being based on age) it would cost me about $50 MORE per month than the AARP-UHC Plan F.

We will be switching next year in the open enrollment period. This is a dumb mistake by United and their marketing arm AARP. After just a basic medicare supplement insurance - which is the same from all vendors - the silver sneakers program was the only reason to even talk to AARP. Next year - gone.

I agree! I'm meeting with my rep next week. Was signing up with AARP. Now, I'm not sure! I use my Silver Sneakers program a lot! So disappointed in this decision if it is true. Now I have to rethink what insurance to go with! Seniors should NOT have to deal with all this crap.

I am not happy with AARP and United Healthcare to drop Silversneakers for 2019. One of the main reasons I signed up for AARP and United Healthcare is I believed they cared about the health of seniors. Taking this benefit away is devastating.

What can we do to make sure our voice is heard about this specific topic???

If a couple is in good health the Silver Sneakers benefit is very rewarding, not just to a persons health and financial health but also to the lower financial costs of the Insurance Company providing this benefit.

AARP and United Healthcare are really showing a true lack of concern for customers by removing this Silver Sneaker benefit. This program has now been replaced by a "special program offer of 50% off the monthly membership retail rate" at a very few and non-beneficail locations. This is just AARP & UHC "blowing smoke" into the customers (add your own thought here) by misdirection. If a "couple" both recieve 50% off,,, well that's not much different from paying 100% which is comparable to a normal family membership cost.

We signed up for AARP-UHC this November 2018 due to being told that the Silver Sneakers program was available. I guess it was, but not for long.

We'll be another pair of Retiree's that will be dumping AARP & UHC next enrollment just like I suspect several thousand current customers will be. I've read that Blue Cross & Cigna both currently provide Silver Sneakers so that's where we'll be shopping.

I missed the announcement about SilverSneakers back in September. Sad to see that your dropping SilverSneakers, I joined this about 2 months ago and joined a Gym under the program. Now I see this will be dropped and no longer offered. The options left are not good and makes we wonder why I signed up for Health Care through AARP, maybe it's time to go to another provider. Kinda sneaky how this was announced.
