Retirees living on fixed incomes have been feeling the pinch of rising grocery costs.

Grocery prices in February rose 2.6 percent year-over-year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index. For some items, such as eggs, price hikes have been much steeped.

I recently saw a local newscast regarding having chickens for eggs. The results concluded that rather than paying the grocery store $8.00 a dozen, by the time you invest all you need to invest to start a chicken coop, and all you spend tending to the chickens….,that you would spend many multiples of the 8 dollars for each of your home grown dozen eggs.

Anyone remember when you could order baby chickens and they would be shipped through the mail. True story, we had chickens back in the day and also had to hang clothes on the line to dry. We had a crazy rooster, for no reason he would run up to you and peck your legs. It was wash day and the lines were full of clothes. My uncle comes home after stopping by his watering hole. Rooster runs up to him, bad mistake, uncle grabs him by neck and pops his head off. The body ran all over the yard shooting blood all over the clothes on the line. We all thought it was funny except my mother and g/mother who had to rewash all the clothes. It was very loud at the supper table that night, and yes we had chicken.

There are always pigs. Might not be a bad idea especially since medical science is thinking about pigs when it comes to kidney transplants for humans.
