FREQUENT AARP emails - asking members to sign-up for Automatic Membership Renewal

I just received an email with the request - "One optional step many members forget is turning on Automatic Renewal. It helps make sure your membership renews on time, without extra reminders or last‑minute steps." -- My membership is currently active till 4/30/2033 - almost 7 years into the future. I had almost 2 years left when I accepted an offer to extend membership 5 years at a reduced rate, which I've done before. Why oh why do we need to be, harassed with renewal requests or requests that we take automatic renewal when we have a subscription far into the future, or even over a year into the future? That is extremely annoying to receive over and over again. We get barraged by too much email (not just AARP), without being reminded about a non-problem, right? And as a former programmer, it seems like some simple rules could be employed to not send renewal type notices to people with a subscription significantly into the future. -- I am seriously against agreeing to most automatic renewals to let a company pull money out of an account at the new increased rate, for an annual rate which will also be higher, so unlikely I will ever agree to such an option, and this is just annoying and seemingly frequent. Yet I don't want to opt out of a whole class of emails to avoid that one topic.

Hi @ja85047216 Theres a couple different things you can do right now on your own to cut down on these.

First at the top right hand corner where your name is, click on that.

Choose Communication Preferences. Then Email Preferences. Once there you can limit the renewal reminders. ( see screen shot).

Then all the way at the bottom of the webpage. You’ll find the Privacy Hub and Privacy Choices, take a look at those and you can tweak things to your liking on what you share with them. (see screenshot).

I can tell you right now that doing what I just suggested above has limited my constant barrage. Good luck!

Appreciate the suggestion, and I went immediately to check on this, but see that I already had that selected... so guess I'm already receiving less than it could be (wow). I'm sure they're trying to conserve members, ... at an annual rate (rather than any multi-year discounted rate), but may just be annoying members, which may be counter-productive. Used to be that subscription services didn't pester you to resubscribe till you were within a few months of the end of your subscription.

and like any membership thing, they want you to renew well ahead--months or years before it actually ends, I guess they figure the older the more likely to forget how much time you still have on your membership

I would get angry with magazine subscriptions years ago when I’d have several different ones. They’d send a renewal reminder way ahead of the magazine needing to be renewed. I ended up writing the day I renewed it on the receipt portion, (snail mail renewal), and the month of the last issue scheduled to arrive. That way when I’d get the pesky renewal notices so early in the mail, they’d go right to the shredder after checking my dates. No more double renewal mistakes!
