Thanks for a great post; wasn't aware since didn't watch/follow this show.

But this "festivus tradition" somehow reminds me of our gathered family feasts during the 60s and early 70s; with GGPs having 8 children, GPs having 13 children, and pretty much almost 100 cousins and seconds-, these "holiday" traditions were off the wall; I have to say I'm so relieved my daughters didn't have to suffer through them as we relocated as far away as possible, not due to the holidays, but that was a bonus...

The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.

💪🏻 Feats of Strength

🙌🏻 Festivus Miracle

😤 Airing of Grievances

┃ Festivus Pole

FESTIVUS

Each year on December 23rd, Festivus commemorates a holiday episode of the television comedy, Seinfeld. In 1997, the popular television comedy brought Festivus to the masses when Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) explains he invented the holiday in response to the commercialism of Christmas. Its slogan is "A Festivus for the rest of us."

HOW TO OBSERVE FESTIVUS

Festivus traditions derived from the television episode and the original creator have been combined over the years.

Adorn an aluminum Festivus pole to be displayed in the home. In the O'Keefe household, there was no pole. Instead, a clock was placed in a bag and nailed to the wall.

Serve a traditional dinner in the evening.

During dinner, allow the Airing of Grievances. Each person takes turns describing how the others have disappointed him or her over the past year.

Feats of Strength follows dinner and involves wrestling the head of the household. Note: The holiday is not complete unless the head of the household is pinned. Failure to pin the head of the household could result in perpetual Festivus.

Festivus Miracle - a frequent if unimpressive miracle. You may count carrying all the groceries into the house for dinner without tripping or dropping one of the bags as a Festivus Miracle.

While watching the Seinfeld episode, count the number of miracles. Pick up an aluminum pole. Decorate it. Let the Airing of Grievances begin and celebrate. [source: National Day Calendar]

✨ The Festivus - Seinfeld [YouTube]

✨ Top Festivus Moments | Seinfeld [YouTube]

Other Festivus... for the Rest of Us!~

✨ Festivus!

Never cared for the Costanza family characters myself. While they constituted a plausible back-story for George's neuroses, the yelling and screaming grated on my ears (which I suppose could be a contributing factor to aforementioned neuroses).

That said, the Festivus idea in general appeals to me. Change the 'Feats of Strength' and 'Airing of Grievances' to 'Unselfish Reflection' and 'Opportunities for Improvement' and it makes a great segue into the traditional New Year's Resolution custom.

Also one Bread-n-Butter tactic/strategy of people afflicted with antisocial and borderline personality disorders is to promote divisions along the lines of cultural traditions by calling them Differences. By unifying with a shared holiday it could become a...

Festivus

For The

Best of Us
