I have been contributing to the AARP Grief Forum for 3 years with
focus on holiday and other life events. As you all know, the holidays
can be very trying with or without family. Over the last several
years, I have seen some changes on how I view the holidays and what
role I want to play. That is probably an experience many of you who
are grieving have also seen. How we "celebrate" the special days,
including anniversaries, is very different for each of us. I hope
that you can remember the happy days as well as find a new solo path
today. It is helpful to reestablish equilibrium. You are not the
same person who was the caregiver, the person who lost his/her loved
one or the person today. That may seem scary, but it is really a
natural transformation. Reflection with meaningful social interaction
will help get you through these times. It is ok to limit your
activities or time spent with friends and family. It will take time
to readjust and begin to "enjoy" life again. I wish you peaceful
holiday season and a better and healthy New Year. Your friend, Sue
