I I have been an empty nester for over 20 years. I just retired after 42 years at the Postal Service. I thought I would want to constantly travel, but since I worked in a big processing plant, I go to 3 retirement luncheons. Since, my kids do not want kids, I decided to pull a Benjamin Button and age in reverse, so I can be the grandchild. Since, I am an animal lover, I ask to go to the zoo and see the new babies like gorillas and orangutans. This year I went to a cowcuddle, where you groom and pet Scottish Highland cows, who are so gentle, I call them the Golden Retrievers of the cow world. An extra benefit is that the fee helps the farmers pay for hay to be shipped in during the winter. I go to the Disneyland parks and ride all the the fast and furious rides, that many of the younger people in the group won't. I have been promised that I can go up in a Hot air balloon soon. I go to our local Comic Con and enjoy celebrities and collect autographs. I collect Funko Pops and get them signed. I have met Stan Lee, Barbara Eden, Jeremy Renner, Dick Van Dyke, Buzz Aldrin, Susan Sarandon, Mel Gibson, Geena Davis, Michael J Fox and recently Oscar winner Ky Huy Kwan, the Indiana Jones kid, the Goonies kid and the husband in Everything, Everywhere All At Once and hundreds more. I get a lot of hugs from the celebs and Henry Winkler let me kiss him on the cheek. I go to a lot of concerts including ones that people wouldn't expect one my age to go to.I went to Post Malone/Jelly Roll's Stadium tour and just last night went to Benson Boone's arena tour. Next on the agenda is Maroon 5. The people I invite get monikers like the cool uncles, aunts, moms and grandmas. I have gone to comedy shows like Bill Maher, Sarah Silverstone, Ronnie Chieng, David Spade and soon I will be going to Adam Sandler (again) and Nate Bargatze.I did go on a Malt Shop Cruise and saw the Beach Boys, Priscilla Presley, Chubby Checker, Dean from Jan and Dean and the Nelson twins singing their Dad's songs plus 20 other groups and I got to feed iguanas at one of our destinations. I asked Mike Love of the Beach Boys, if they remember the amusement park mentioned in their song" Salt Lake City". Since, Salt Lake didn't have any other venues at the time they came 3 times a year for several years. Also, the hit song She'll have Fun, Fun, Fun 'til her Daddy takes the T-bird away, originated in SLC when the station manager was taking the group to the airport and the manager's daughter was driving their T-bird . Getting backstories of our childhood from celebs is so fun! Matthew Modine let me know he grew up close to my childhood neighborhood and told us his Dad ran swap meets at drive-ins during that time. I go to a book club every month after re-connecting with a high school friend and we also have season tickets to the ballet. I also have season tickets to the symphony, where they play the score to well known movies like Harry Potter. I also have season tickets to a Speakers Bureau, where I listen to some big name political people. Maybe, sometime I'll find time to travel! I want to go on a Safari, Australia/New Zealand-to see where Lord of the Rings was filmed , Europe and Scandinavia where all my relatives were from. I have a close friend who does genealogy, so I'll get her to show me how to find my ancestors. When I have to actually settle down, I'll probably volunteer at an Animal Shelter.

My wife and I have been taking a 4-7 day vacation at least once every three months by visiting with out-of-state friends and/or family, venturing to new cities we've never been too before, or getting in a fabulous ski getaway or a cruise. We're also knocking off a home improvement project once a year to keep our home fresh and fun!

Our son moved out and we became empty nesters! We were 'dating' again, travelling, dinners out, meeting up with old friends. Alas, that came to an abrupt halt as her mother has now moved in with us. Oh, to be part of the 'sandwich' generation.....

When I was working full time while also raising my son who has major special needs, every waking moment was spoken for. My life now is so different!

I now can go to bed and get up when I wish. I can eat out with a friend or just stay home and watch a full TV show uninterrupted. (Before I had been lucky to be able to watch five minutes on any given day.) Even having the ability to go shopping for groceries without playing a game of "Beat the Clock" is a luxury that I don't think I will ever take for granted. (I used to have to get grocery shopping done during my son's social skills class.)

Now that my son is in a group home, I feel like I have in some ways graduated from being his mother to being his grandmother. I can visit him as often as I wish, spoil him and have fun times with him, and then let the group home staff deal with the day-to-day tasks of cooking and cleaning for him, taking him to his doctor appointments, making sure he is safe day and night, etc.

I have become an ambassador for my adult son's group home organization. They have not only been keeping him safe, but have been helping him to have as fulfilling a life as he can have. I love being an ambassador for them: Not only am I helping the organization that is helping my son, I am also getting to share how wonderful they are with other parents who are considering group homes.

I am a retired teacher and had missed public speaking. I now feel that I am getting the joys of teaching without having to deal with grading.

So now I get to have the best of being a teacher and a mother without having to deal with their downsides. And being so busy and having so much responsibility when I was younger has made me appreciate life's little pleasures so much more now that I have far less responsibility and far more free time.

I doubt I'll win this contest since I am not engaging in any grand travel adventures (I want to stick close to my son in case he needs me), but I am happy with my life and take great joy in the little things. And really, what more could one ask for?

Empty nest! Again! My kids were both out, then they moved back in at the beginning of COVID-19 . Just this summer, they both launched for the second time.

I find myself leaving the bathroom door open. I practice my karaoke without fear of someone walking in on me. I clean up after myself, and it stays clean (until I make another mess).

We have had a total of seven kids between us. So having an empty nest is certainly strange. But we love it. When the last of the kids finally moved out we started doing Airbnb in our home (kid's old bedrooms) for a while. Great money, very helpful. With the onset of COVID we stopped doing Airbnb. Now we enjoy having friends stay over and love having late nights with friends cooking, drinking wine and staying up as late as we want!

When the last of the kids left for college, the house felt cavernous. The echoes of slammed doors, late-night laughter, and even the occasional argument had been replaced with silence. At first, the quiet was unbearable.

I started to notice my wife more, as the girl I fell in love with so many years ago. We started taking after dinner walks, cooking meals together, we even signed up for a dancing class. We took road trips, and visited friends and relatives we hadn't seen in years.

We slowly started to realize that the empty nest was not the end of something, it was the beginning of our new adventure together.

an empty nest has allowed us to travel and make those trips longer to places that have been on our bucket list for some time.

Since retiring then moving to Portland Oregon in 2020, I have found a community through volunteering with various programs of Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) - Aging Well, Ambassador Council, Community Advisory Board, Esther’s Food Pantry, and Camp KC, along with other temporary needs and events for this amazing nonprofit organization serving the HIV & LGBTQ+ communities in the Portland area for 40+ years.

As a client and volunteer I have felt welcomed, needed, and celebrated for who I am.

Gene Bishop
