The echo was the first thing they noticed. For twenty-five years, the house had been filled with the low-thrumming beat of teenage life: refrigerator doors slamming, video game shouts, the distant, muffled sound of a washing machine running until 2 AM, and, most recently, the celebratory roar of LSU football broadcasts that rattled the windows.

Now, silence. A beautiful, profound silence.

The last of the moving boxes—packed mostly with well-worn textbooks and slightly-too-small purple and gold hoodies—were finally gone, driven off to two separate apartments in two different cities where Dean and Daniel had started their careers. Their boys were launched, and now, it was Janet and Ricky’s turn.

“Are we doing this right?” Janet asked one Tuesday evening, pausing the remote halfway between Survivor and S.V.U. She was curled on the couch, her feet tucked under Ricky’s leg.

Ricky, who was scrolling through vacation rentals on his iPad, didn't look up immediately. “Are we doing what right?”

“This,” she gestured vaguely at the living room, which was pristine—no abandoned socks, no stray chip bags, no debate over which console needed the HDMI port. “We haven’t eaten dinner before 8:30 PM since Daniel was a toddler. We're watching movies we choose. We’re traveling to places where there are no required university tours.”

Ricky finally put the iPad down, turning to meet her eyes. “I think we are, darling. I think we’re entering the victory lap.”

Their first real taste of freedom was a weekend trip to Gulfport, Mississippi. They booked it on a Thursday morning, leaving on Friday afternoon. No complex schedules to coordinate, no texts about forgotten assignments, just two mid-fifties professionals throwing clothes into a bag and driving south. They spent Saturday afternoon walking hand-in-hand along the coast, eating seafood that didn't involve a drive-thru, and marveling at the luxury of only paying for two airline tickets in the future.

But the real magic happened in the mundane. Now, date night wasn't an event—it was just Tuesday. They found a new tapas place downtown with dim lighting and fantastic sangria. They talked about work, retirement fantasies (which always involved a beach and better Wi-Fi), and, often, they’d spend twenty minutes laughing about a ridiculous anecdote from one of the boys’ childhoods—a memory that had been too recent and too painful to be funny when it actually happened.

At home, their new rhythm was simple and profound. After a long workday, they would trade their tailored clothes for comfortable sweats, cook a simple, delicious meal (usually something messy and flavorful that they knew the boys wouldn’t have touched), and retreat to the sanctuary of the living room.

The couch, once a battleground for territory and volume control, was now their fortress. They binged shows and films, sharing a massive bowl of popcorn and debating every plot twist. More often than not, Ricky would wake up to the sound of the end credits rolling, Janet asleep against his shoulder, her hand resting softly on his chest.

It wasn’t just silence in the house; it was space. Space to breathe, space to connect, and space to anticipate. As they watched their boys build independent lives, Ricky and Janet found themselves feeling lighter, filled with pride and a deep, quiet excitement for the future.

“You know,” Janet murmured one night, looking at a photo of the two boys shaking hands with their LSU dean. “The house is too quiet, sure. But just think, someday, we’ll need to make room again. For grandkids. Tiny little Tigers running around.”

Ricky smiled, pulling her closer. “Let them figure out the careers first. But yeah. We’ll be ready. We’ve got the quiet house, and we’ve got all the practice we need being supportive. For now, though,” he picked up the remote, “turn off the light, and let’s see if we can finish this movie before midnight.”

My wife and I have been taking a 4-7 day vacation at least once every three months by visiting with out-of-state friends and/or family, venturing to new cities we've never been too before, or getting in a fabulous ski getaway or a cruise. We're also knocking off a home improvement project once a year to keep our home fresh and fun!

Our son moved out and we became empty nesters! We were 'dating' again, travelling, dinners out, meeting up with old friends. Alas, that came to an abrupt halt as her mother has now moved in with us. Oh, to be part of the 'sandwich' generation.....

When I was working full time while also raising my son who has major special needs, every waking moment was spoken for. My life now is so different!

I now can go to bed and get up when I wish. I can eat out with a friend or just stay home and watch a full TV show uninterrupted. (Before I had been lucky to be able to watch five minutes on any given day.) Even having the ability to go shopping for groceries without playing a game of "Beat the Clock" is a luxury that I don't think I will ever take for granted. (I used to have to get grocery shopping done during my son's social skills class.)

Now that my son is in a group home, I feel like I have in some ways graduated from being his mother to being his grandmother. I can visit him as often as I wish, spoil him and have fun times with him, and then let the group home staff deal with the day-to-day tasks of cooking and cleaning for him, taking him to his doctor appointments, making sure he is safe day and night, etc.

I have become an ambassador for my adult son's group home organization. They have not only been keeping him safe, but have been helping him to have as fulfilling a life as he can have. I love being an ambassador for them: Not only am I helping the organization that is helping my son, I am also getting to share how wonderful they are with other parents who are considering group homes.

I am a retired teacher and had missed public speaking. I now feel that I am getting the joys of teaching without having to deal with grading.

So now I get to have the best of being a teacher and a mother without having to deal with their downsides. And being so busy and having so much responsibility when I was younger has made me appreciate life's little pleasures so much more now that I have far less responsibility and far more free time.

I doubt I'll win this contest since I am not engaging in any grand travel adventures (I want to stick close to my son in case he needs me), but I am happy with my life and take great joy in the little things. And really, what more could one ask for?

Empty nest! Again! My kids were both out, then they moved back in at the beginning of COVID-19 . Just this summer, they both launched for the second time.

I find myself leaving the bathroom door open. I practice my karaoke without fear of someone walking in on me. I clean up after myself, and it stays clean (until I make another mess).

We have had a total of seven kids between us. So having an empty nest is certainly strange. But we love it. When the last of the kids finally moved out we started doing Airbnb in our home (kid's old bedrooms) for a while. Great money, very helpful. With the onset of COVID we stopped doing Airbnb. Now we enjoy having friends stay over and love having late nights with friends cooking, drinking wine and staying up as late as we want!

When the last of the kids left for college, the house felt cavernous. The echoes of slammed doors, late-night laughter, and even the occasional argument had been replaced with silence. At first, the quiet was unbearable.

I started to notice my wife more, as the girl I fell in love with so many years ago. We started taking after dinner walks, cooking meals together, we even signed up for a dancing class. We took road trips, and visited friends and relatives we hadn't seen in years.

We slowly started to realize that the empty nest was not the end of something, it was the beginning of our new adventure together.

an empty nest has allowed us to travel and make those trips longer to places that have been on our bucket list for some time. But, to be honest, we do sometimes miss

them and are happy to see them, as long as it’s a SHORT visit!

Since retiring then moving to Portland Oregon in 2020, I have found a community through volunteering with various programs of Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) - Aging Well, Ambassador Council, Community Advisory Board, Esther’s Food Pantry, and Camp KC, along with other temporary needs and events for this amazing nonprofit organization serving the HIV & LGBTQ+ communities in the Portland area for 40+ years.

As a client and volunteer I have felt welcomed, needed, and celebrated for who I am.

Gene Bishop
