Re: AARP Now with Google Fit for AARP Rewards

I unraveled the instructions on my own through the questions and answers for Google Fit.

The instructions in the first item for activating Google Fit are incomplete. They would require only a few simple changes to make them useful.

This is my suggestion for rewriting the two paragraphs:

Download and install the Google Fit app and allow it to track your activity.

Don't worry. The setup walks you through the steps when you open the Google Fit app the first time.

Next, in AARP Now, go to the "Account" tab in the top navigation and open AARP Rewards. In AARP Rewards, select "Sync a fitness tracker." Select one of the fitness trackers and log in to your respective account.

Mine should be set up for tracking on Google Fit, now that I figured out what I was missing in the instructions. These instructions could be improved even more, but I think my minimal changes are necessary for understanding what to do.

Stay well and enjoy!

Lynn

P.S. Thanks to whoever set up our tracking through Google Fit, since many of us already have that or can get it on our cell phones.

Recently, I saw that we could now pair up AARP Now with Google Fit to fulfill the exercise part of AARP Rewards, which should let us earn points and meet goals without buying a special activity tracker.

The article gave a few steps on how to download and pair the two, but I can't seem to pair them.

I have an Android cell phone. I already have AARP Now app loaded on it. I also already have Google Fit and have been using it for quite a while.

I cannot seem to find a way to pair the two. Does anybody have knowledge about steps I could take to get these paired and start earning points for AARP Rewards? Do I need to remove them and reload them? Can pairing be done from a hidden link in one or the other of the apps? The instructions in the article seemed to be missing steps, at least for pairing in my situation.

He'p me! He'p me! 😎

Re: how to encourage wife to fight anxiety

Hi <LI-USER uid="17806125"></LI-USER> - I'm sorry you are going through this. I imagine it has to be quite difficult. We all can lose our joy from time to time. It sounds like your wife has lost her joy. I recommend calling the SAMHSA hotline for guidance and support.

Some ideas that may help in the meantime:

Take a moment with your wife each day to express gratitude. Name one thing you are both thankful for.

Carve out time to pursue a passion or something new that sparks joy, even if it's only 15-20 minutes. Ask your wife what she would like to do and be patient as she may not know right away.

Start a daily mindfulness practice together. There are a lot of guided meditations online that can help your wife to focus on being present.

Take time to go outside every day. Reconnecting with nature can be quite healing. Be patient with this as well as it may take some time for your wife to feel motivated to do this. Maybe start with opening a window so she can feel the breeze and smell the outdoors, or having her sit in a sunny spot so she can feel the sun warming her.

I hope you are able to get help and that your wife can find her joy and meaning again. Sending you comfort as you navigate this road 💜

Elyce, when my mom was in an assisted living place they had that door disk system like you describe. As I've aged alone in a condo and especially during this pandemic, I've started thinking a digital system for still independent seniors would be a good idea. IamFine looks interesting, and would be good for younger people with mobility limitations too. There is an iPhone / Android app called Snug Safety that looks good, but only allows a 10 minute window for checking in at a pre-set time. KiteString dot io is another possibility, maybe, tho it might require leaving home to activate. And there's HelloHibou dot com that might work too. There are probably more. That was just a quick Google check.

With something like 14 million seniors living alone, daily check in services are sure to grow in coming years.

Hi, RachelA. While AARP Friendly Voice seems like a lovely idea, it's not quite what I'm looking for. What I was asking about was a company where you could call or text them every day to let them know that you're alive and well. I came across a company called "Iamfine" where you do this by a pre-designated time each day and if they don't hear from you by then, they will try you four more times for an hour after that and if they still don't hear from you will then alert a pre-designated contact person or persons that they haven't been able to get in touch with you and that person will take it from there. I was hoping that someone could offer opinions on that company or other companies that provide that similar service.

So it's not quite like Life Alert where you press a button in the event of an emergency, but it's a better option than the prospect of being deceased for days or weeks before anyone knows that something is amiss! My late Dad lived in a senior apartment building where there was a plastic disc on each apartment door that the resident flipped down by a certain time each morning, and a staff person would then walk the hallways looking for for discs that hadn't been flipped down which would signify that something was wrong and they could then check on that resident. I live in a regular high-rise, so there's no such service currently available to me.

I have witnessed my wife go from an active, busy woman to a fearful, unmotivated, person. Now it is progressed to her not even caring for herself and experiencing weight loss, which she cannot afford to lose. She has had numerous (4) eye surgeries this past year and blames them for her anxiety. I cannot get her to do anything and I have tried walking, music, talking and encouraging her to see a therapist. Her primary care doctor just wants to give her prescriptions for drugs and we don't want to do that. Any recommendations on sparking her ambition?

I only WISH I had a child to check in with! What I’m looking for is a service that I can call or text daily. The one that I found on Google gave the opportunity to provide them with contact information for your “caring circle” which could be one person or several different people. You provide the service with a daily check in time. If they don’t hear from you by that time they try to reach you four times within an hour after, and they will then contact your circle.

Being totally alone truly sucks!

Hi <LI-USER uid="9927850"></LI-USER> what exactly are you looking for? Someone to contact you EVERY day or for you to call in EVERY day? I also live by myself with one child in another state. We check on each other EVERY day. Whoever gets up 1st, texts good morning to the other one. We do the same at nights. Whoever heads to bed sends a goodnight to the other. In between those, we will email or video call as we need to and have the time for. Do you have someone who cares to do this with maybe. Lol, I am cheap and do not trust that machines or folks I am paying to be reliable. But that is just me. Great post 🙂

In reading, listening, and talking to people, I've learned there is so much misinformation about the upcoming Covid vaccine that is causing a lot of people to become paranoid and terribly frightened about getting it! I thought I would share some of the information I have obtained from doing research on the subject using very reliable sources:

1. The vaccine does NOT contain a live virus. The virus that is injected is dead.

2. The vaccine, just like a flu shot, will NOT give you the Covid virus.

3. The vaccine will NOT change your personal DNA, will NOT cause Bell's Palsy, make you impotent, cause a stroke, make you go blind, etc. etc.

4. The vaccine should NOT be given to pregnant women or children under age 18 ONLY because researchers don't know how/if the vaccine would affect pregnant women or children.

5. The Covid vaccine CAN but not necessarily WILL cause the following side effects...

     * Pain, redness, or swelling where the shot is administered (same as flu shot)

     * Fever

     * Fatigue

     * Headache, muscle pain

     * Chills, joint pain

6. If you have any reactions to the vaccine, most happen within the first couple days and last no more than three days.

7. The vaccine requires you to get two shots, 3 to 4 weeks apart.

8. Researchers are constantly working on new vaccines to adapt them to different situations. The reason the vaccines were discovered so quickly was because scientists and researchers already had some basis to start with due to other viruses that have been treated in the past (ie. SARS, N1H1, the "common" flu virus, etc.). It does NOT mean any precautions or steps were disregarded or skipped over in order to come up with a vaccine so quickly.

9. NO PART of aborted fetuses are part of the vaccine!

10. Even after receiving the vaccine, people will still need to continue wearing masks and social distancing for awhile.

I hope this will put some peoples' minds at ease. And those who may have heard and been told some of the outrageous and false information will share the information I mentioned above with others. Be safe. Be healthy.

Hi <LI-USER uid="16806982"></LI-USER>, I have not seen services that provide flu vaccines at home. This year, flu shots will be available at pharmacies (like CVS and Walgreens), doctors' offices, and health departments. I believe some health clinics will be providing drive-up flu shot clinics as well.

Typically, the flu vaccine is free with insurance. If you have insurance, I would call them to see if there are at-home services available in your area and if there are, they can tell you the approximate costs.

*bump

Does anyone have any tips or anecdotes to share with <LI-USER uid="17107248"></LI-USER>? Please reply if you do!

First of all, I'm not a medical or dental professional, but it's always been my understanding that it's best for people to keep their natural teeth for as long as possible. Did the dentist give an explanation for this treatment plan? Does your mother have many bad cavities now? If your mother's remaining teeth are healthy and she is still able to eat and drink without any issues, yet her dentist is recommending full extractions and dentures, I would get another opinion.

Another thing to consider - if they are offering extractions and then molding for the dentures that same day, the dentures will likely never fit quite right and may be uncomfortable for your mother. Dentists offer that option so that folks don't have to go without teeth for very long, but for the best fit, it's best to take the molds when the gums have fully healed.

My mother is pretty healthy, other than moderate dementia. They want to extract her 24 remaining teeth under local anesthesia and fit her with dentures. She can enjoy food now and is not in pain. She does have some worn-out dental work, recently lost a crown) and had an abscess in February. I’m afraid this would cause her to have a downward spiral in both health and morale. She is happy and I want her to stay happy. Any similar experiences (positive or negative) to share? Thank you.

I think the current AARP puzzles offering is a pretty good mix. I regularly play: Mahjong Remix (and occasionally some of the other solitaire versions), CodeWord and Bridge. Also enjoy an occasional game of Word Wipe, 10x10 (when I have time, it can take a while), Pool (8- and 9-Ball both), and Backgammon. Enjoy playing on-line Bridge and Chess but have to honestly say I don't care too much for either of the current versions AARP is using. Would like to see Scrabble and Logic-Art (see most issues of Games Magazine) added to the AARP site because I trust their site security more than some of the sites I find elsewhere on the Internet.

Each evening I start with a hard to very hard crossword puzzle, then play a few hands of online bridge. After that, I enjoy a difficult word search and finish with several games of mahjong solitaire.

I do many different puzzles to keep my brain active, and my favorite by far is Puzzle Page. Each day you get 8 or 9 different types of puzzles and you can choose the difficulty. The variety utilizes various skills and just like physical exercise you need more than one to stay fit.

the puzzle i like best is a game i stream off internet onto my roku t.v. it's called text twist. it gives you 6 letters & you try to guess as many as you can timed or untimed but you advance to next level when you use all 6 letters (another part of the game has you using 7 letters). whenever i get bored & have time to kill i go to text twist it keeps my mind busy

Finished in 2 months. Really enjoyed them. So ordered some more word searches. But the old puzzle book was the best

Every day I do an online jigsaw puzzle. For me, they are more satisfying than actual jigsaw puzzles because it's so easy to manipulate the pieces with my mouse. There are at least five free online jigsaw puzzle sites to choose from. I visit a different site each day for variety.

Your 10 minute workouts are a life saver for me!!!! I am using Denise Austin's Flat Belly video and her walking video. I also love Bryant Johnson's 10 minute Balance video. I've tried other longer videos online but these are perfect for me!!! I'm 77 with two total hip replacements. Your videos are keeping me limber and not as afraid of falling. I count on your videos. However, I don't know how to save them and when G-Mail removes them - I don't know how to get them back. I don't know how to save your emails to a folder on gmail that will not be deleted. I also do 10 minutes on my stationary bike and walk the dog around the neighborhood when the outside temperature is lower than 80 degrees!

Thank you so much for all your wonderful emails that are helping me to stay healthy!!!!!!

As we r retired I do have time for working out. Before corona I did circuit training 45 minutes 3 days a week plus 1 hour a day biking(Just over 10 miles) each am.

Now that our gym is closed due to corona I bike 2 hours each morning (about 21 miles) monday thru friday and 1 hour a day on the weekend. I now only do 150 arm curls using 15 lb weights. So my upper body is getting way out of shape. I do miss the circuit training.Am getting enough cardio just need upper body strength training. We now have video classes so will be trying that.

It's always good to try hitting a goal amount of steps, minutes, classes, miles, or whatever. However, always keep in your mind that anything is better than nothing. Don't skip an activity because it would "only" burn a few calories or get you moving for a few minutes.

Hi <LI-USER uid="21900331"></LI-USER>! I recommend checking with local gyms and studios in your area. There's a spin studio by me that started a monthly rental program for their spin bikes. If there's a gym you use, I'd start there. If they don't offer rentals, they will hopefully be able to give you suggestions.

Hope that helps!

Check the mayoclinic website.
For healthy adults they recommend about 30 minutes of moderate exercise and 10 minutes of strength training a day. They also note the most important thing is to just do what you can. Something is better than nothing.

Scammers use coronavirus (COVID-19) headlines as opportunities to steal money or sensitive personal information. They will also seek to take advantage of our heightened levels of anxiety.

Please be aware of the following coronavirus scams:

At this time, there is no vaccine, treatment, or cure for COVID-19. Ignore offers online or in stores that claim to offer treatment or cure.

Scammers are offering coronavirus testing to attempt to steal health insurance or Medicare information. Never provide your Medicare number to anyone but your own medical professionals.

Scammers may call asking for bank information to deposit your “Trump dollars.” Please only follow the information on any financial support from a source you trust and that you can validate.

Scammers are making robocalls to offer air duct replacement to help keep coronavirus out of your home. This is a flat out scam.

Be on the lookout for requests for donations to help people affected by the coronavirus. Defer any decision to give a donation to a cause until you've researched it. Online options include charitynavigator.org and give.org.

Links or texts from sources you don't know could cause a malicious software virus to be download onto your device. Pause to consider the credibility of the source before you click.

Be suspicious of any emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or experts saying that they have breaking news information about the virus. Emails from local, state, or federal government entities will come from an address ending in .gov.

The rush for canned this and frozen-appetizer that, coupled with the total clearing of the supply of white rice and pasta in most grocery stores nationwide, brings much cause for concern. While you should have these nonperishables on hand, it's wise to eat as much fresh food as possible, to help boost your immune system and to stay healthy for the long term says chef Devin Alexander.
