With care, bulk buying of flour on sale can save time and money. Remember to break down larger amounts into small storage quantities when you get home. For example, I buy 20 or 50 lb at a time and rebag into 5 lb units and store them in a large airtight, opaque container in the pantry.

I buy only organic food and I buy at Amazon fresh and Whole Foods, which deliver right at my door, so there’s no need running anywhere, save gas and time. When, I start my list, I add what I plan to eat in a few weeks. I have found that if you wait a week, items go on sale and then others might run out but I always look at the bright side- try a new recipe with what you can buy.

Vegetables are always fresh and have found out prices are way lower than other stores.

I sit down a few days before and review all the store ads to see what is on sale. I make a list and stick with it and don’t buy anything unless I actually need it & will use it. I usually go to several stores (most staples at Aldi, produce at Sprouts, bread & frozen fish at Trader Joe’s, etc). I use both store & manufacturers coupons but again, only if I need the product. I also read ingredient labels…some little known pet foods may be healthier & yet much cheaper than big name brands…same with cereals, etc. I often choose frozen organic fruit instead of fresh produce…it may cost a bit more sometimes, but I find there’s less waste from spoilage & the vitamin content is better since it’s frozen when fresh. I don’t get fast food & it’s very rare that I eat out. I cook enough for several meals and freeze what I don’t eat.

I taught Logic as a Philosophy course for many years. In teaching how to work Logic proofs (similar in process to Geometry proofs), one of my best tips was to work forwards and backwards in conjunction with one another. What is your starting point? What are your options from there? What is your ultimate goal? Working backwards from there, what options do you have?

A maze-puzzle is a good illustration. Start at the beginning; when you get to a place at which the next "turn" isn't obvious, stop. Then go the end of the maze; work backwards from there until you are "stumped." Now, see what the options are for connecting the two partial paths.

KH

Oops, I noticed a mistake. I meant to say, "...would benefit by holding various poses for much longer than taught in routines." @sjrosterfer5 -- Your story is amazing, and especially so, because your yoga is self-taught! Experiment with hold your poses for longer durations, and pay attention to the minute changes that happen, that even observing instructors will not be able to see. I think you will learn a lot about your own body that no one else will be able to teach you.

I remember at my previous job, a co-worker was helped in moving her residence, by another worker almost twice her age. She told me she was exhausted, but Victoria was tireless. I mentioned it to Vic, and she said simply, "I do yoga."

At the time I found yoga, my pulmonary function was at 36%, my Psoriatic arthritis wasn’t too bad, but my fibromyalgia and Raynaud’s were making life difficult. Shortly after starting yoga, using a book I found in a bookstore, I noticed quite an improvement in the Raynaud’s; I assumed due to the increased circulation. After nine months, a recheck of my PFT showed 96%, my doctor was overwhelmed, saying 5at it was an incredible turnaround, and great for anyone let alone for a 43 yo asthmatic with an underdeveloped lung ! My rheumatologist is adamant about the benefits of yoga for arthritis. It has the added benefit of quieting my mind, a few poses before bed and I sleep much better. The practitioner has total control over how they practice; gentle, or degrees of strenuous. Just the fact that one is getting in touch with how their own body works, and feels, is empowering because they know that they are at least acting to take control of their health.

Even just five reps (5 minutes!) a day actually changes my walking stride. And I'm surprised that I don't have the muscle soreness that I would have had in my 30s and 40s. Don't know why that is...

Mark Bittman, of VB6 book fame, is definitely on to something! Have used this way of eating for 2 years and never feel deprived. It allows for occasional splurges. Eat vegan meals twice a day and one meal your choice. Eventually one finds they eat less meat (I rarely eat red meat for many reasons). I do eat seafood and this diet just makes you feel better. Have lost 25-30 lbs over last 2 years, weight staying within 5lbs flucuation. No diets, just change how you eat.

I agree that there are amazing benefits to holding poses and that a lot of yoga doesn't focus on that <LI-USER uid="340206"></LI-USER>. It's almost like we've taken yoga and mimicked it to more reflect how we move through life since everything is so fast-paced these days, which is why flow classes are everywhere. I have found some styles that do focus more on holding poses - restorative, iyengar and yin yogas focus on alignment and holding poses. These styles are more gentle and very meditative while focusing on proper form and promoting relaxation.

I haven't done yoga routines in several years, but I do remember the principles applied to the asanas (poses,) which help me significantly, e.g., holding, calming, breathing, attending to changes. I have been developing arthritis in my upper back and shoulders, for which I now do a lot of the mountain pose (tadasana.) One of the principles of classical yoga is the duration of holding, which seems not to be a concern when yoga routines are taught today. I think many people would benefit by holding various routines for much longer than taught in routines. I frequently hold tadasana for 2-3 minutes, and attending to the minute changes that occur, which I believe trains my brain to remember correct spinal alignment. Just a thought. Specialization on certain asanas that target individual issues may be as important as overall flexibility and strength. One's past history has an influence also, as I seem to have retained much of my fitness from my days of distance running as well.

How to Budget Groceries: 6 Easy Tips

Grocery shopping habits changed a bit during the pandemic. Many are spending less time in the store and shopping less frequently. Grocers have started using some sly tricks to get you to spend more.

To avoid falling for those tricks, it’s wise to have a grocery budget and to stick to it. Here are some simple tips to follow to set your budget:

Avoid eating out, unless you’ve budgeted for it – Frequently eating out is a quick way to ruin your grocery budget. Set a limit and adhere to it.

Keep a fridge grocery list – Keeping a magnetized notepad on your fridge enables you to write down items you need as you run out. Stick to your list when you are in the store.

Don’t go to the store hungry – According to this survey, shoppers spend 64% more when they go grocery shopping on an empty stomach.

Since I live so far away from and not many people left from my family, I rely heavily on my friends. We would go out to eat to "catch up", attend some events together, etc. Unfortunately, covid killed off most of my relationships. My friends (50s-60s-70s) are too afraid to go out. Being home all the time, they say they are "too busy". We tried a few zoom sessions (mainly around our birthdays) but eventually that fizzled out too. And frankly, I"m tired of being everyone's "secretary" and doing ALL the planning. The phone, zoom, email WORKS BOTH WAYS. If my long time friends can't be bothered, then why should I do all the work? So right now I'm just doing things for myself, BY myself. I can make myself happy. Dancing is getting started again and I'm going out to have fun!

I'm fortunate in having two women I consider my best friends. First is my cousin who used to sit on my knee when she was a toddler and I was twelve. She's now 70 and I'm 82. She still lives in New England and I now live in California. Thanks to the internet, we write to each other every day, and we talk about anything and everything. Second is a younger women who lives in the same town as I do. When I was president of the local garden club and needed a volunteer to set up a web page, she volunteered. That was 17years ago and we've been best friends ever since. We also correspond daily even though we live in the same town. Between the two of these wonderful women, I never feel at a loss for someone to talk to, and to listen to.

Been practicing yoga (hatha and vinyasa) for more than 15 years, started in mid-40s. It's the one "exercise" program I've been able to stay with as it's more than that - it's now my way of life. I will never be without it! Benefits for me: keeps me trim and toned, with well defined, strong muscles. Has improved my posture, balance and gait - I am very aware of how I move and my spatial presence. Yoga has aided my concentration, mindfulness and relaxation, and has challenged me physically in a fun, safe manner - I could never do a handstand in youth - now at 63, I'm so excited to be able to include handstands and other fun arm balances in my practice! Met tons of great friends through my studios, and with COVID, we've been able to sustain practice through live ZOOM classes offered from my studio. Yoga is for everyone - there's a practice to suit all, from beginners to pros, gentle seated stretches to more vigorous aerobic routines. Visit more than one studio to find a good fit with really good instructors. Namaste, baby!

Does Aging Affect How Cold We Feel?

I remember listening to my grandparents complain about being cold in the house, so is it true that aging makes us feel colder? This article explains that the part of the brain that coordinates heat regulation in the body is the hypothalamus, but scientists are still working out the specifics of how, why and what role it plays in our changing perception of cold. Until then, the best way to beat the cold is to bundle up, turn up the thermostat, or perhaps book a flight to a warmer climate. Visit AARP® Staying Sharp® for more brain health information.

I've done decades of race/speed walking, some 10 years of Tai Chi for seniors, and several years of yoga. Each has aspects I especially appreciate: the walking is aerobic and gets me (and the dog) outside; the Tai Chi enhances fluidity and flow (both inner and outer); yoga stretches and strengthens. Of course they all overlap in improving breathing, balance, posture, and focus, along with awareness of inner being, the immediate environment, and the connection between them. All are adaptable to individual abilities and limitations. All can empower healing and personal growth as well as maintain wholeness of being. I have used each for all their benefits and sometimes with particular goals in mind. I like yoga best for upper body strengthening, and the wide variety of poses that make it both adaptable and challenging.

Now, as aging has made low back issues chronic, I am no longer able to forward bends and asymmetric poses, and I especially value the many poses that remain from which I can build sequences. I am also increasingly appreciative of chair yoga as an option for anyone who chooses it. One does not have to become a pretzel to benefit from yoga, but one does have to take responsibility for one's body and choose movement that both fits and encourages one's health.

I tried that but the "buddy" and I always had different ideas on how fast to go or what to do next. I found I was always giving in to "buddy's" way of working out. Not a fun workout.
I enjoy the workouts, doing what I want and going at MY pace.

Yoga is everywhere these days, and there's a reason for that! It provides copious amounts of health benefits and comes in a variety of levels and styles to suit any age or mobility.

Here are 5 surprising health benefits that come from practicing yoga:

Research shows that yoga offers a better way to ease depression and anxiety than walking as a form of exercise.

It helps ward off age-related cognitive decline in important areas of the brain.

Yoga poses and meditation also boost recall ability and other cognitive skills, according to a study published in the May 2016 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Adding yoga to migraine treatment may be more effective than medication alone at reducing the severity and frequency of these often incapacitating headaches.

Yoga can be used as a tool for healing past trauma.

Lots of things can be made just as quick as instant packets, I sort of borrowed the amounts of rice and orzo, 1/2 cup of each, add two teaspoons of butter in a glass casserole dish n microwave on high for 2:30 minutes n stir, add 2 1/3 cups water heated for 2 minutes with garlic salt n pepper n a sprinkle of parsley with 2 teaspoons low sodium better then chicken bouliion paste add together n cover with press n seal wrap and microwave for 6 minutes 3 times, stirring in between and it is just like Lipton rice pilaf but no preservatives

Angela, I am definitely NOT a techy but if I were, I would gladly send you pics of my cats. They are both female, rescues and under 2 years old. Not from the same litter but have been together, since they were abandoned. "Harmony" is black and "Carmen" is a Torbi. Harmony is a wild woman, Carmen is quiet & laid back. Both are entertaining, in the evening, both cuddlers, (but not at the same time,) and both are most assuredly, life savers!
