How to Budget Groceries: 6 Easy Tips

Grocery shopping habits changed a bit during the pandemic. Many are spending less time in the store and shopping less frequently. Grocers have started using some sly tricks to get you to spend more.

To avoid falling for those tricks, it’s wise to have a grocery budget and to stick to it. Here are some simple tips to follow to set your budget:

Track your current spending – First, you’ll need to figure out what you are spending on food to decide what you should be spending on food.

Avoid eating out, unless you’ve budgeted for it – Frequently eating out is a quick way to ruin your grocery budget. Set a limit and adhere to it.

Plan your meals – Ensuring you have a purpose for each item you buy will help you avoid food waste. Not every meal has to be a fine dining experience, don’t be afraid of keeping things simple.

Keep a fridge grocery list – Keeping a magnetized notepad on your fridge enables you to write down items you need as you run out. Stick to your list when you are in the store.

Don’t go to the store hungry – According to this survey, shoppers spend 64% more when they go grocery shopping on an empty stomach.

Use coupons, but with caution – If an item isn’t on your list, don’t buy it simply because you have a coupon.

Savvy budgeting requires being adept at understanding monthly cash flow, problem-solving, impulse control and planning.

I remember listening to my grandparents complain about being cold in the house, so is it true that aging makes us feel colder? This article explains that the part of the brain that coordinates heat regulation in the body is the hypothalamus, but scientists are still working out the specifics of how, why and what role it plays in our changing perception of cold. Until then, the best way to beat the cold is to bundle up, turn up the thermostat, or perhaps book a flight to a warmer climate. Visit AARP® Staying Sharp® for more brain health information.

Yoga is everywhere these days, and there's a reason for that! It provides copious amounts of health benefits and comes in a variety of levels and styles to suit any age or mobility.

Here are 5 surprising health benefits that come from practicing yoga:

Research shows that yoga offers a better way to ease depression and anxiety than walking as a form of exercise.

It helps ward off age-related cognitive decline in important areas of the brain.

Yoga poses and meditation also boost recall ability and other cognitive skills, according to a study published in the May 2016 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Adding yoga to migraine treatment may be more effective than medication alone at reducing the severity and frequency of these often incapacitating headaches.

Yoga can be used as a tool for healing past trauma.

Yes, on a very short-term basis was her response. ⚠️ I also went online to read up on the possible side effects. Yikes, possible liver damage. 😱

To reduce my dosage, I wait until my pain kicks in before I take only 1 Advil. Yes, bottle says 2 is okay. It also says take 4 to 6 hours. And not more than 6 in 24 hours.

Lol, I have a notebook to keep track of my dosage as it is already a challenge to remember to take my daily blood pressure pill as soon as I wake up. 🤣😂 No need to overdose on Advil and end up in the emergency room. 😱

I also keep 2 ice packs in my freezer to use for my swollen gum. I am a big baby with pain. 😭 Pain and swelling goes away within 1/2 hour. I have learn't to chill during that time = stress aggravates my pain. My nurse practitioner also told me pain increases our blood pressure. 😱

Angela

Recently, I saw that we could now pair up AARP Now with Google Fit to fulfill the exercise part of AARP Rewards, which should let us earn points and meet goals without buying a special activity tracker.

The article gave a few steps on how to download and pair the two, but I can't seem to pair them.

I have an Android cell phone. I already have AARP Now app loaded on it. I also already have Google Fit and have been using it for quite a while.

I cannot seem to find a way to pair the two. Does anybody have knowledge about steps I could take to get these paired and start earning points for AARP Rewards? Do I need to remove them and reload them? Can pairing be done from a hidden link in one or the other of the apps? The instructions in the article seemed to be missing steps, at least for pairing in my situation.

He'p me!

....Lose weight, exercise — good health can be such a chore. But indulging in guilty pleasures may be good for us. One of my favorite things to do is spending the day in bed--wearing pajamas and reading a good book. It doesn't happen very often, but it's something that gives me pleasure. Looking for ideas on how to treat yourself? Check out this blog to learn how decadence may be good for the brain. Visit AARP® Staying Sharp® for more brain health information.

Online Resources to Schedule a COVID-19 Vaccine Appointment

Help is out there! Even as vaccine restrictions loosen and supplies ramp up around the country, appointments for a vaccination remain difficult to get, and many older Americans still need help to schedule one. A good place to start is with a vaccine-locating website such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) VaccineFinder.org.

State and county government websites, national and local pharmacy websites, and aggregating websites such as VaccineFinder are also designed to help those who want the shot find available vaccines in their area.

Learn more: Online Resources to Schedule a COVID-19 Vaccine Appointment

Another helpful resource I've found is VaccineFairy.org. They will help you schedule an appointment, and I know people that have received appointments this way.

I have witnessed my wife go from an active, busy woman to a fearful, unmotivated, person. Now it is progressed to her not even caring for herself and experiencing weight loss, which she cannot afford to lose. She has had numerous (4) eye surgeries this past year and blames them for her anxiety. I cannot get her to do anything and I have tried walking, music, talking and encouraging her to see a therapist. Her primary care doctor just wants to give her prescriptions for drugs and we don't want to do that. Any recommendations on sparking her ambition?

My first round with Pfizer affected me with two or three mild symptoms for a few days without even a hint of fever, but my second one provided no discernible symptoms, other than a slightly sore knot at the injection site for about 2 days. I noticed the soreness only when I rubbed it. Otherwise, it was just business as usual.

I have heard of everything from no symptoms up to being "a real doozy." So, just get the vaccinations when you can and don't worry about it. I worried that my second one might kick my butt, but I ended up riding my bike just about every day. That's how serious it was.

I only know what I've read and heard and how that news compares to my experience. I'd gladly get the shots again with the hopes that it would keep me from even a mild case of the real COVID-19.

Stay well,

Lynn

I get regular e-mails from Reader's Digest.

This morning, I saw an article that talked about whether or not a person needs the vaccination, even if he or she has already tested positive for COVID-19.

“If You’ve Had COVID-19, Do You Still Need the Vaccine?”

By Tina Donvito, Updated: Mar. 10, 2021

My takeaway:

The vaccines trigger more immune response than the virus infection does. So, even if you have had COVID, the vaccine can still help protect you better than natural immunity from the disease.

Stay well,

Lynn

Some of us have been chomping at the bit to get the vaccines. If you're like me, you even missed announcements they were available for age 70+ until it was almost time for 65+ to be included.

Luckily, after being told by my local health department that February was all filled up and we couldn't do anything about it until March, or so, an opening came up for last week and I signed up for Pfizer and got my first shot on Sunday (2-21), after a snow day made them postpone from last Wednesday (2-17). Since my wife is a teacher, she already had her second Moderna shot through her school district a week and a half ago.

My wife's first dose gave her a sore arm near the vaccination site and little else. The second one gave her more of a rash on the arm and soreness, along with slight body aches and not much else.

My first dose of Pfizer this weekend gave me some overall discomfort and tenderness in the muscle where I received the shot, but I've had worse experiences with my first half-day of a cold. On Sunday, about 6 hours after the shot, I had some slight body aches, which were in no way debilitating. The body aches disappeared within 2 or 3 hours and I felt fine. I had a lighter reaction and for a shorter time toward evening last night after not noticing much during the day.

I heard from one of my cousins that her first Pfizer dose was not too bad, but the second one was a doozy, so I shouldn't plan anything for 2 or 3 days after that one.

From what I've read, some react more than others, but nurses and doctors all seem to agree that the heavy reactions are good because they indicate that the body is working hard to build up immunity.

My cousin and I agree, along with many others, that the reaction to the vaccine is well worth it against the specter of coming down with COVID-19.

When you get the chance for your vaccine against the coronavirus, even if you have to dig a little or make daily contacts with the health department or whomever to get signed up, do it! That's rule No. 1. Rule No. 2 is that if you get Pfizer or Moderna or another one that requires two doses, be sure to sign up for the second round before you leave the building from your first one.

Stay well and enjoy!

Getting reasonable exercise with as many worn out parts as I have is not an easy task, so I rely on our Personal Trainer - Fritzie the dog. Getting past 75 has been a lot less troublesome with a couple daily dog walks. Dogs are perpetual 3-year-old children - they want to be outside doing stuff, need to stop and examine everything (which slows down the action to a doable level) and leads to pleasant interaction with other dog walkers. Best of all, unless you're in a big city, not even Covid interfers with your daily workout, and in the winter, wearing a mask is both a way to stay safe from the virus AND be kind to your lungs in the northern climes.

You don't need a lot of money to retire

Retiring is great, when I retired I was extremely happy, I had worked all of my life I'd worked. Since I was 12 years, after school and on week-inns, it was great nothing could make me happier making my own money at the age of 12 years. After school I got a job and has worked every sense, now I am enjoying myself to the fullest. I enjoy life and I plan to continue to enjoy my life as long as I can. I have enjoyed singing and traveling while doing so. Now, I would love to travel more but seems as if This coronavirus has put a stop to my travel, I love to travel. There is nothing better than seeing other parts of the world. You don't need to be rich to retire and travel. All you need is love. Have faith in yourself and do the things you love to do. To me, this is what life is all about enjoying yourself even with family and friends. Gettering is great but not so many people around. Still enjoy your self as much as possible. Life is good so be good to life. There is good in traveling, things we've never seen before you can enjoy it. You can be happy with yourself and understand other things while traveling. You don't need to have lots of money to take vacations once in awhile. Be happy people and enjoy your life. May God bless all of you out there. Be safe but be happy.

But those who are 65 and older will still likely need to wait a few months before they can get vaccines that are in high demand but relatively short supply. Shots are expected to be widely available by mid-2021, but some may get them earlier.

What to expect when you get the shingles vaccine

Hi everyone,

This health site Ask a Patient might be of use for people about to get or thinking about getting the new 2-dose shingles vaccine called Shingrix, as it has more than 400 comments from patients who have received the vaccine. (a disclosure, I work on this site but thought this information could be of use to people in this forum.) Many of the folks at the site's forum have commented about not being informed about how severe the side effects would (or could) be, while others said they were fully informed and got the shot on a Friday so that they would have a couple days of down time to recover. Often, the reaction is more severe with the second dose. However, many of them said the discomfort is worth it not to get shingles in the future. Check out these patient experiences (442 in all), sortable by age, gender and rating score:

https://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=581490&name=SHINGRIX+VACCINE

Another interesting thing I learned when researching this is that children today may not be completely protected from getting shingles in the future, even if they get the chickenpox vaccine. Check out this article in the Atlantic: "Why Do We Need Separate Chicken-Pox and Shingles Vaccines? " It does say that
"Kids who got chicken-pox vaccines are less likely to later get shingles than kids who naturally caught chicken pox"

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/10/shingles-chickenpox-virus/543816/

Hope this is helpful .

COVID VACCINE MISINFORMATION

In reading, listening, and talking to people, I've learned there is so much misinformation about the upcoming Covid vaccine that is causing a lot of people to become paranoid and terribly frightened about getting it! I thought I would share some of the information I have obtained from doing research on the subject using very reliable sources:

1. The vaccine does NOT contain a live virus. The virus that is injected is dead.

2. The vaccine, just like a flu shot, will NOT give you the Covid virus.

3. The vaccine will NOT change your personal DNA, will NOT cause Bell's Palsy, make you impotent, cause a stroke, make you go blind, etc. etc.

4. The vaccine should NOT be given to pregnant women or children under age 18 ONLY because researchers don't know how/if the vaccine would affect pregnant women or children.

5. The Covid vaccine CAN but not necessarily WILL cause the following side effects...

     * Pain, redness, or swelling where the shot is administered (same as flu shot)

     * Fever

     * Fatigue

     * Headache, muscle pain

     * Chills, joint pain

6. If you have any reactions to the vaccine, most happen within the first couple days and last no more than three days.

7. The vaccine requires you to get two shots, 3 to 4 weeks apart.

8. Researchers are constantly working on new vaccines to adapt them to different situations. The reason the vaccines were discovered so quickly was because scientists and researchers already had some basis to start with due to other viruses that have been treated in the past (ie. SARS, N1H1, the "common" flu virus, etc.). It does NOT mean any precautions or steps were disregarded or skipped over in order to come up with a vaccine so quickly.

9. NO PART of aborted fetuses are part of the vaccine!

10. Even after receiving the vaccine, people will still need to continue wearing masks and social distancing for awhile.

I hope this will put some peoples' minds at ease. And those who may have heard and been told some of the outrageous and false information will share the information I mentioned above with others. Be safe. Be healthy.

Tips to Stay Safe in the Stall

Have you been wondering how to safely use a public restroom during the Coronovirus pandemic? You aren't alone! Check out these helpful tips to stay safe:

Go before you go. Most older adults can't go hours and hours without going to the bathroom, as bladder muscles tend to weaken with age. What's more, the older you are, the more likely you are to have issues such as urinary incontinence or prostate problems, says Rosanne Leipzig, M.D., professor and vice-chair of education for the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. If you think the answer is to hold back on fluids, don't: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the effects of dehydration, Leipzig notes. Take all your necessary medications, too, including ones that can have diuretic effects, like blood pressure meds. What you can do? Avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks, which can make you urinate more because they are diuretics. Also, when you go to the bathroom before you leave your house, practice double voiding: This means after you go to the bathroom, wait 20 to 30 seconds, and then try again to fully empty your bladder.

Wear a mask. Keep it on even in a seemingly empty bathroom, and wear it in the stall. It's also important to make sure the bathroom is well ventilated — you can usually tell if you hear a fan. Research shows that well-vented restroom air moves quickly so that any aerosol droplets won't persist for very long.

Spritz the stall before you enter. Philip Tierno, a clinical professor of microbiology and pathology at NYU Langone Health, recommends spraying the air in a stall, as well as the toilet seat, with a disinfectant that contains ethyl alcohol and dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate, such as Lysol, and waiting up to a few minutes, ideally, before entering. “We know that the COVID-19 virus can remain suspending in the air as microdroplets for several hours,” he explains. “The spray will bring down the virus particulates that do remain in the air, so you're less likely to breathe them in.”

Prepare to flush and rush. The problem of toilet plume can easily be dealt with by putting the lid down to flush, but public restroom lids often can't be lowered. In these cases, be prepared to exit as soon as you flush, says Tierno. Don't bother fiddling with paper toilet seat covers, either: It's not likely that they offer any additional protection.

Double up with hand sanitizer. Even after you lather up and wash your hands after using the loo, it's a good idea to use some hand sanitizer as well. Make sure to reapply it if you've touched any high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, faucets, or wastebaskets, as well.

Skip the hand dryer. A 2018 study published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology suggests that hot-air hand dryers could potentially be germ bombs, shooting out loads of viruses and bacteria from bathroom air directly onto your hands. Opt for a disposable paper towel instead, suggests Tierno.

Don't putter around on the potty. Almost 75 percent of Americans admit to using their cell phone while on the toilet. But while you're in a public restroom, just skip it. “You really want to limit your time in the bathroom right now and just use it for what it's intended for,” says Leipzig.

Flu Vaccine Tips

Older adults in particular are at higher risk of severe illness from both COVID-19 and influenza, which experts say makes getting a flu shot this year — including timing your shot and choosing the right type of vaccine — more important than ever.

Check out the tips below to find out when and where you should get vaccinated.

When should I get vaccinated?

Flu shot availability began popping up at pharmacy chains and doctors’ offices this summer, but when it comes to getting the shot, earlier isn't better. “The best time to get vaccinated is from mid-September through the month of October,” says William Schaffner, M.D., medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

Experts aren't able to predict how long a given flu season will last, but activity typically peaks between December and February and can last as late as May.

Which flu shot is right for me?

Adults 65 and older should ask their health care provider for either the high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine, Schaffner says, both of which produce a stronger immune response (and therefore more protection against the flu) in older adults.

This year, the high-dose vaccine is quadrivalent instead of trivalent — meaning it protects against four strains of flu instead of three — and a quadrivalent version of the adjuvanted vaccine will also be available.

Where can I get the flu shot?

Some locations that typically offer flu shots, like workplaces, won't be able to this year due to concerns around maintaining coronavirus precautions such as social distancing. Pharmacies (including national chains like CVS and Walgreens), doctors’ offices and health departments around the country are still offering vaccines, which are typically free with insurance. (Find a location near you with the CDC's <A href="https://vaccinefinder.org/find-vaccine" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-overlay-msg="AARP.Everywhere.LeavingModal.drawOverlay(this,'',/content/aarpe/en/home/health/conditions-treatments/info-2020/flu-shot-schedule.html,'','You are now leaving AARP.org and going to a website that is not operated by AARP.

Schaffner says that some medical practices in suburban areas are even planning to host drive-up flu shot clinics. Others, he says, have already shifted their scheduling to offer flu shot-only appointments in the morning or late afternoon, which help patients minimize the time they spend inside and around others.

7 Ways to Cope with Anxiety During the Coronavirus Pandemic

These ideas from the experts may help keep your anxiety under control.

1. Limit news consumption

It's important to know the facts and what you can do to protect yourself and to take all precautions — but it's not going to help stress levels to obsessively watch the news, says Stewart Shankman, chief psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University.

"The biggest source of anxiety is uncertainty,” he says, “not knowing what's going to happen, when it's going to happen, how long this is going to last. And we don't know. So, trying to know, trying to resolve that uncertainty, is counterproductive. It's going to make you more anxious.”

Shankman says that he's not suggesting denial.
Rather, it's “sort of accepting this is the current situation and not letting it interfere with your life."

2. Practice calming techniques

Different people relax in different ways, but if you feel particularly anxious you might try deep breathing, taking a warm bath, or sitting with your pet, says Neda Gould, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins Medical School. “Alternatively, try mindfulness: bringing attention to the experience and kind of allowing it to be there, and not judging it and knowing that it will pass.” If you need mindful or meditative guidance, try free apps such as Calm; Breethe; UCLA Mindful, an app developed by the University of California, Los Angeles, Mindful Awareness Research Center; and Mindfulness Coach, from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

3. Move your body

"If people are able to just do a little bit of exercise, just walk around or stretch — just to sort of calm the tension in your body,” it will help, says Shankman. “If you calm the tension in your body, you calm the tension in your mind.”

4. Connect with loved ones

Call, email or video chat with family members, especially if you are feeling isolated or you know that they are. You may find that they have more time to talk than they usually do because so many people are home from school and work, Jane Timmons-Mitchell, associate clinical professor of psychiatry at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, points out. “There might be some grandchildren that you don't get to communicate with a lot, but now maybe they could because those people aren't as busy."

5. Listen to music, find activities that bring joy

With symphonies, opera houses, ballets and theaters shutting down or losing their audiences to quarantine measures, many are bringing their offerings online: The Berlin Philharmonic, for instance, gave a free livestreamed concert on March 12, while playing to an empty concert hall; it's offering free access to its archived concerts through March 31. The Philadelphia Orchestra is offering its recent live performance of “BeethovenNOW: Symphonies 5 & 6” online, as well. “Watching a concert like that is going to help somebody feel better, and probably less anxious,” says Timmons-Mitchell.

6. Get stuff done

Tackle a hobby you've wanted to explore, or a project you never seem to have time for. Maybe you have some watercolor painting supplies in a closet, or a big box of old photos that you've been meaning to transform into a keepsake album. Accomplishing tasks such as cleaning clothes closets or garages can be rewarding, while diverting your attention from anxious thoughts.

7. Find ways to laugh

Humor is a wonderful coping mechanism in times of crisis. Turn to sources you find funny, whether they're movies or TV shows, or certain friends whom you know will brighten your mood.

If you feel like your anxiety is getting extreme, interfering with your daily functioning, for example, ask for help. Reach out to your doctor, and a trusted confidant.

If you're starting to have thoughts about self-harm get help immediately, says Timmons-Mitchell, who suggests calling the 24-hour National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, at 800-273-8255. “They have a lot of tools at their disposal, and they're trained to provide really good services,” she says. “People shouldn't feel hesitant to call them because they want to hear from you."

ACA Insurance and the Coronavirus

Check out the latest on special open enrollment periods, life-changing events and more ⬇️

I need health insurance now. Can I sign up for a plan under the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

Maybe. For some people, it's possible to enroll in an ACA plan right now. Typically, enrollment is open only during a set time each year, called open enrollment. However, a life-changing event — such as loss of previous health coverage due to job loss— may qualify you for a special enrollment period.

What if I don't qualify based on a life-changing event and still need insurance?

You may still be able to enroll in an ACA plan, depending on where you live. Though the federal government runs the ACA marketplaces for the majority of states on HealthCare.gov 12 states and the District of Columbia run their own exchanges. And many of them are offering special open enrollment periods due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Which states have reopened enrollment because of the pandemic?

Several states held special open enrollment windows due to COVID-19. The following are continuing to accept new enrollees:

California: through Aug. 31

District of Columbia: through Sept. 15

New York: through Sept. 15

And if I don't live in one of these states and don't qualify with a life-changing event?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which oversees HealthCare.gov, is evaluating the idea of a special open enrollment for the marketplace, according to a March 23 statement from an agency spokesperson.

AARP sent a letter to Congress on March 25 asking for a nationwide special open enrollment period: “Access to affordable health care coverage is more important now than ever,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP's executive vice president and chief advocacy and engagement officer. “We continue to strongly support a national special open enrollment period (SEP) to allow those without insurance in this country to get covered. Many state-based exchanges have already enacted these special enrollment periods, but we urge Congress and the Administration to act to ensure that access to coverage be available nationwide."

It's also important to note that <A href="https://www.aarp.org/work/career-change/info-2020/applying-for-unemployment-benefits.html?intcmp=COMM-OC-TOPIC-HLTH-HT" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-overlay-msg="AARP.Everywhere.LeavingModal.drawOverlay(this,'',/content/aarpe/en/home/health/health-insurance/info-2020/aca-coronavirus-faq.html,'','You are now leaving AARP.org and going to a website that is not operated by AARP.
Will my ACA plan cover coronavirus care?

The symptoms of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, include:

Fever or chills

Cough

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Fatigue

Muscle or body aches

Headache

New loss of taste or smell

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

Nausea or vomiting

Diarrhea

The majority of people who get sick with COVID-19 have mild symptoms and are able to recover at home. Some cases, however, are more severe and may require medical attention.

In those instances, all ACA plans are required to cover emergency services and hospitalization. Policyholders, however, may have out-of-pocket costs from coronavirus-related care, depending on their individual plans and any copayment and cost-sharing responsibilities.

I have already tested positive for the coronavirus. Can a health plan deny me coverage?

No. All ACA plans must cover treatment for preexisting medical conditions. And plans can't terminate coverage due to a change in health status, “including diagnosis or treatment of COVID-19,” according to HealthCare.gov.

What will an ACA plan cost me?

There are four types of plans in the ACA marketplace, and your monthly premium and out-of-pocket costs depend on your plan:

Bronze: Lowest monthly premium; highest out-of-pocket costs. Deductibles can be thousands of dollars a year.

Silver: Moderate monthly premiums; moderate out-of-pocket costs.

Gold: High monthly premiums; lower out-of-pocket costs; low deductibles.

Platinum: Highest monthly premiums; lowest out-of-pocket costs; lowest deductibles.

Depending on your household income, you may also be eligible for a subsidy to lower your monthly premium, as well as assistance to help cover out-of-pocket costs.

My mother is pretty healthy, other than moderate dementia. They want to extract her 24 remaining teeth under local anesthesia and fit her with dentures. She can enjoy food now and is not in pain. She does have some worn-out dental work, recently lost a crown) and had an abscess in February. I’m afraid this would cause her to have a downward spiral in both health and morale. She is happy and I want her to stay happy. Any similar experiences (positive or negative) to share? Thank you.
