Hi Glenda,

Savoy Brown was awesome!  We got there early enough to get front row seats.  In fact, we got the same seats that we had for Wishbone Ash.  Kim Simmonds is an amazing guitar player and a great singer too.  When they announced that they were going to do a meet and greet afterwards I bought my husband a poster hoping the guys would sign it.  We were the first ones in line.  The drummer came out first and talked to Don for quite awhile and signed the poster.  The bass player signed it too.  Then out came Kim Simmonds.  Don told him he had been listening to him since 1969 when he was in the army in Germany.  Kim asked where he was stationed and when I told him Don always wanted to see him and that it was his birthday he wished him a happy one and signed his poster.  Needless to say it was a very Happy Birthday for my husband.

I was done with this topic until I thought about Thunder Road .. and I had to go and youtube it..  what a great song : )  Tell me you can listen to this song and be taken back to those long ago summer nights

"Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's bustin' open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting down on the tracks"

Hi Janese. How was Savoy Brown? I still have one of their old LP vinyls!

And Diane I really like your new photo, plus have been having a good time catching up on the latest posts. Loved Be-Bop-A-Lula, Freddy Fender and the new vid of S Tyler!

To wind this weekend down tonight,  I feel like listening to some Ryan Bingham. This is just one of my favorites of his.

Hey J

Thanks for the Marty Casey  version of Creep.  I had forgotten about Marty Casey and I am glad you reminded me.  I also really liked that show. Hope to see it again.

Here is Marty doing his version of Wish You Were Here.  I think he did a great job but of course there is no replacing ever of anything by the Floyd.. the masters : )

Hi Glenda,

Well, Bon Jovi has come and gone and today I'm getting prepared for tonight's concert.  We are going to see Savoy Brown featuring Kim Simmonds at a small venue.  My hubby has wanted to see them for years and tomorrow is his birthday so this is a special treat for him.

Bob Dylan is a music genre unto himself.  He has taken steps like that old fable of the seven league boots and no one will ever take his place or take us to places that he has.

Thanks Lenny!  I was not familiar with Warren Haynes but really enjoyed this performance and I think I would like the CD.  Had no idea he was in the Allman Brothers band (only members I know are Gregg, Dicky and Derek).  Not familiar with Gov't Mule either.  Always good to have some new music to listen to.

What a good time you must have had jammin with Taj!! I've only got to see him twice. Once with Jessie Ed so many years ago it seems like an eternity, Car loads of Jessie Ed's people drove up from southern Oklahoma to see him. Quite a show. Then once after Jessie Ed.

I can't think of what album this song was on originally. Was thinking Nach'l Blues but I dug my copy out only to find Leavin Trunk isn't on it. The Cuckoo is. Know I've got it, but probably on cassette tape, imagine....if so it's probably lost to me. Glad to know how much you appreciate Leavin Trunk. Sad, but true, some have probably never heard it, especially the younger ones.

IMO this performance falls a bit short of the recorded version's rhythm counterpoint between Taj's on-the-beat staccato strummed National Steel guitar and Jesse Ed's on-and-off-the-beat riff, then overlaying the Bass riff making it perfect and very infectious. It was that precise arrangement that made it one of my very favorite recordings.

(The J.Geils Blues Band of the time also knew the infectiousness of slow and open arrangements. We saw them often at the Woodrose Ballroom in Deerfield MA.)

Taj's jazzy delayed vocal (again over a Jesse Ed riff) on "cuckoo" (same album) is also brilliant.

BTW I went to UMass with Taj, and remember the "Battles of the Bands" between "Taj & The Electras" and "Steve & The Esquires" at the Student Union. Taj played jig band music iwthi his fingers on a Fender (Strat?), and Steve did a signature backflip off the stage during a "cover" (NPI) of James Brown's "Please, Please." I also remember jamming with Taj in the practice rooms while he played John Henry on slide banjo...HB, Henry!

Incidentally, Buffy (St. Marie) was at UMass during the same period.
