This morning, the Recording Academy announced the nominations for the 2018 Grammy awards and for the first time, Grammy voters acknowledged the dominance of rap, R&B and Latin pop in the streaming era. Jay-Z led all candidates with eight nominations, but rising stars like SZA and Khalid also picked up five nominations apiece, and Luis Fonsi's inescapable summer hit "Despacito" earned multiple nods as well. Here are five takeaways.

1. Grammy voters finally paid attention to streaming numbers.

2. Pop suffered.

3. The Academy nominated four minority performers for Album of the Year, tying a record.

4. Grammy voters still love Jay-Z.

5. Grammy voters appear ready to welcome new blood.

2018 Grammy Nominees Announced: Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars Lead the Way

The National Academy of Recording Arts has announced the nominees in the running for the 2018 Grammy Awards. The 60th annual ceremony returns to New York City this year, recognizing the best in music released between Oct. 1, 2016 and Sept. 30, 2017. Awards will be given for best new artist, record of the year, song of the year and album of the year, as well as myriad genre-specific categories.

Rap/hip-hop artists lead the way in this year’s slate. Jay-Z tops the lot with eight nominations, dipping his toes in the album of the year, record of the year and song of the year categories. Unsurprisingly, as **bleep**. was one of Paste’s top picks for our favorite albums this year, Kendrick Lamar holds the second most with seven, and Bruno Mars follows them up with six. SZA is the lady of the moment, garnering the most nominations as a woman with five. Joining her rank are Childish Gambino, Khalid and No I.D., each getting five nominations, as well. And a number of other Paste favorites landed nominations, including Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Gorillaz, The War on Drugs, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Sylvan Esso, Father John Misty, The National and Chris Stapleton.

James Corden will again bear the onus of host this year, and the ceremony takes place on Jan. 28, 2018. Below, see some notable nominations, and check out the complete list here.
