My first car was a 1953 Ford with an inline 8 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual transmission that I paid $50.00 for in 1964. I was enrolled in an Electrical Engineering ciriculum at LSU at the time. I had just accepted a night time position as a Broadcast Engineer for a local Baton Rouge AM broadcast station and needed a car to get to work (I was living in a campus domitory). I did not have a driver's license at the time so another classmate gave me driving lessons. I took the driving test at a Louisiana State Police station. The officer that administered the test said that he shouldn't give me license but that I wouldn't learn to drive without it. He gave me parting advice telling me to stay off the Airline Highway until I developed some driving skills. The first day driving to work was really nerve racking, I put the car into a ditch when backing out of the station parking lot. However, after a week of total driving immmersion I sort of got the hand of it.

A Hillman was made by the Rootes company, which was actually Chrysler in the UK, so it was one of Ford's competitors.

A 1969 Plymouth Fury I.  It was a copper color and almost matched my copper-colored hair.  It was huge inside.  I drove it for two years, then my sister took it without my permission and totalled it.

My first car was a 1966 Ford Mustang. Beautiful car which I bought used in March 1968 and paid $1,595 for. Black with red interior, 289 cubic inch V8 engine, auto trans. This car was my fist love and I wish I still had it. I will someday have a restored version of this car as soon as I am able to find one for the right price.

My first car was a 1973 240Z.  It was my dad's car (six years old when I turned 16).  He turned down my suggestion that he could give it to me and told me I could earn the money and buy it from him.  My parents matched any babysitting money I saved towards the car (starting when I was 13) and by the time I turned 16, I had enough money.

I absolutely LOVED that car and drove it for almost 10 years.  I remember as a teenager driving my friends around in that two-seater -- one in the front seat and two crammed in the hatchback (these were the years before seatbelts were mandatory).
