I used to deliver newspapers on my bicycle every morning before school.

When I could no longer keep fenders on it, I always got to school with a muddy stripe down my back. When I started walking to school, I found a car that was permently parked beside a house. My brother was good with cars. I saved every Silver coin from my paper route and substituted them with those new "sandwhich" coins. I bought that old car for $25 in silver coins. Me & my brother spent a couple of weeks getting it running again. It was a 1950 Studebaker Starlight Coupe which was older than I was. Loved that car even if it did only have a flat-head six in it.

My first vehicle was a Willys Jeep.  This was in 1950 and it certainly was not new.  Looked like an army vehicle, but oh so much fun to gather about 3 friends and cruise around my small town.

I paid cash for a used Toyota Corolla when I was 19 and also passed the driving test and received my license.

My first car was a 1953 Ford with an inline 8 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual transmission that I paid $50.00 for in 1964. I was enrolled in an Electrical Engineering ciriculum at LSU at the time. I had just accepted a night time position as a Broadcast Engineer for a local Baton Rouge AM broadcast station and needed a car to get to work (I was living in a campus domitory). I did not have a driver's license at the time so another classmate gave me driving lessons. I took the driving test at a Louisiana State Police station. The officer that administered the test said that he shouldn't give me license but that I wouldn't learn to drive without it. He gave me parting advice telling me to stay off the Airline Highway until I developed some driving skills. The first day driving to work was really nerve racking, I put the car into a ditch when backing out of the station parking lot. However, after a week of total driving immmersion I sort of got the hand of it.

A Hillman was made by the Rootes company, which was actually Chrysler in the UK, so it was one of Ford's competitors.
