Yes, now there is a vigilante movement to reach into every city, town of the country and tell others to remove every statue honoring local sons.  It doesn't matter what those affected think, the mob has spoken.  The Germans did it, the Communists did it, ISIS did it, so why can't we?

As far as Robert E. Lee, his reasoning was that it too soon after the end of the war to be erecting monuments as it would reopen the wounds of a terrible war for both sides:  I think it wiser, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.

The question is after all these Confederate monuments are removed, what next?  Of course there has to be a renaming of streets in every burg of the country, its already started in some places.  Are we now to tear out pages in the history books?  So much to do, so little time.

Cent--LOL! Have to admit it, I also wondered as to whether Lee would be looking down--not sure how God feels about treason. But, AP's info. brings to light interesting facts of which I was not aware. @alferdpacker--Thanks AP!

You mean like these - what offends you?

Peace Monument, Piedmont Park, Atlanta, GA

Then after this

It now looks like this without the chains

How far do we want to go with this?

What is your objection to scraping these statues now?  Why keep them?

Most of the statues were not erected until Jim Crow era,  ( 1896 to 1965)  they're not monuments to the Civil war dead, they're symbols of Antebellum racism.

This lost cause stuff is nonsense, most of these statues were erected in the 1920s.

Undoubtedly, he is looking down, grinning and delightedly applauding plans to move statues of him from public places...

Perhaps so . . . . .

You know, alfredpacker, this thing called the "Lost Cause" philosophy was perpetrated on the South after the Civil war.  No doubt about it - it was constructed and contrived

  • to put a saving face on the South, which many needed just to cope with what had gone on.  You know most Rebels owned no slaves - they just showed up to fight.  Is this bad?
  • it memorialized their recent and bitter defeat at the hands of the Yankees  - was this bad?
  • to aid in reunification and reconciliation - was that bad?
  • but it also was trying to elevate white supremacy in the South- yes, bad
  • and to regain the economic and political power needed to insulate white southerners from any future northern interference in their racial affairs. - yes, bad.

Yes, Civil War monuments was all part of the "Lost Cause" philosopy.  Right or Wrong, that philosopy helped to bring back the Confederate states back into the Union with as much ease as possible.

Now we have mob rule in bringing some of the memorials down - or we have legislators deciding that this or that depiction is not what they want.

How far do we want to go with this?

Cases in point - the one that was defaced in Piedmont Park in Atlanta last weekend was a sculpture of an angel stilling the gun of a Confederate soldier.

Removal of the bust of Justice Taney in Md.  because he was the one that wrote the majority decision for the Dred Scott decision - but he was more than that as we both know.  His bust will probably remain in the halls of the Supreme Court as other justices are.

What do you want - all the Confederate memorials taken down?  Some of them mark graves - mass graves.  There is one in Arlington.

Which ones do you and others here want to come down?

What's the difference where they are.  The problem with White Supremist idolizing (some of) them is a problem of another sort - think taking down a depiction of General Lee is gonna stop them or more likely, IMO,  just fuel the flames.

Things, more to the discussion - getting rid of Things - is not gonna cure or stop our problems with racism - or any others.  They are things . . . . what is wrong with U.S.  is much deeper.

It may be debatable whether or not he's "looking down".....

True - no one can say for sure...

Just a figure of speech - not intended to endorse any metaphysical/religious stuff...
