The statue of Thomas Jefferson was attacked Tuesday evening by protesters at the university he founded.
According to local media in Charlottesville, about 100 students, faculty and local residents shrouded the statue in black and hung a banner on it saying “Black Lives Matter” and that “White Supremacy” should commit a sexual act.
Others in the small rainy-night crowd carried signs reading “Thomas Jefferson is a racist and a rapist” and chanted “No Trump, No KKK, no racist UVa.”
The defacement came one month after riots over a white-nationalist protest against a similar shrouding by the city council of statues of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson.

dəface
verb
spoil the surface or appearance of (something), e.g., by drawing or writing on it; mar or disfigure.
"he defaced library books"
synonyms: vandalize, disfigure, mar, spoil, ruin, sully, damage, blight, impair, trash

"spoil the surface or appearance of (something)"

That is what they did...they also disturbed the peace..and many other things that a good lawyer would be able to charge these hooligans with.

People that try to make excuess for their behavior are condoning their actions.

How odd that the verb "covered" was not used. One wonders why they chose the more pejorative, "defaced".  Because that sounds like they damaged the statue, when, of course, they did not.

Another case of the right interpreting things for us. You can't trust them so don't even try.

This thread is very much the way the right has approached the Black Lives Matter movement.  In this case the protesters draped a cloth over the statue.

The right then misinterpreted it for us to be "defacement" just like they misinterpreted BLM to mean that only BLM.

The reality is they simply were trying to stop the number of unarmed blacks who died at the hands of police.  Statistically, the number of unarmed blacks killed by police is way out of proportion to their percentage of the population. So, the only defense the right has is to misinterpret the story.........over and over again.

O.K. and here is a statue of MLK draped in black cloth with insulting signs. Wadda ya think - "racist"? Is racism not a two way street?

We discuss neither definition of words or what supposedly constitutes racism in the "republican/conservative alternate reality".

We discuss the topic proper - as well as examine the phony news aspect of post #1 and the disingenuous conservative bull shoveling regarding racial issues...

Could be, but most wouldn't insist it was "defacing", the actual subject!!!  Once again, a Conservative distorting the actual topic with another "look over there" response.  SHOCKING!!!  LOL!!!

Got it - in the case of Jefferson and MLK "racism" is not a factor - it's all about the definition of words.

Again, you distort the discussion to serve your purposes. It is what it is.....pitiful!

Lumping all those you disagree with as one and attacking each as if they agree with all the others is also bigotry, political bigotry

Agreed. It is a selective thing. The klatch people freely decide to join together and attack others. That's the klatchers, not everyone of a differing opinion. Even on the left there are some capable of independent thought.

And, as to Wolff - I would certainly not lump everyone together in that silly thinking.

That is an interesting point. Of course they are. But there is a constant stream of posts about those who "protect and defend" and yet, I have not yet seen one on these discussion boards.

So, who is it you are criticizing?
