If you have a new Medicare Advantage plan with includes your Part D prescription drug coverage OR a free-standing Medicare Part D prescription plan outside of your Medicare Advantage plan, the insurer should send you a booklet giving you all the details of your 2018 plan.

You do NOT need both, just one or the other - a free-standing PDP( Prescription Drug Plan) or a MA-PD (Medicare Advantage with included Prescription drug coverage)

Actually, many of these things should be a consideration when you pick your plan.

1.  The meds on their formulary, along with their tier structure and cost - deductible, if applicable, and cost sharing under the tier structure.

2.  Any special stipulation on specific meds like prior approval, step method, quality limits, etc.

3.  The pharmacy network where you can get your meds, including

  • A mail order pharmacy option
  • Preferred pharmacies
  • other pharmacies
  • and where you get your best price in these structures.

Here is a booklet from Medicare on the general rules

How Medicare Drug Plans Use Pharmacies, Formularies, & Common Coverage Rules

If you changed Medicare Advantage plans to a new insurer - Walmart may or may NOT be a preferred pharmacy - it might be another one.

You need to read that Prescription Drug Coverage that your choice of insurer for 2018 sends to you.

If you haven't picked a plan yet, I believe you said you are working with an independent agent - they should have access to all this variable info so that you can pick the best plan for yourself.

You can find all your various options at this Medicare.gov site

Medicare Plan Finder

OR contact Florida SHINE - your State Health Insurance Assistance Program.

Ok guys, help me out please.  I just left Humana Medicare Advantage PPO plan after quite a few years. because the doctors in my area were bailing out from taking Humana even out of network.
so, I signed up with United Healh care, because now I have my primary doctor back and some of the specialists and eveh the ones out of Network will take United Health Care.
In Florida you have lots of Medicare Advantage plans but very few PPO programs. I don't care for an HMO plan, and because of a pre condidition I cannot get a supplemental. which is another issue. for me.
I only use Walmart as the place that I get my prescriptions and I think I am getting a decent deal with them.
So, now, what is a person to do.? If United sucks so does Humana, so which PPO plan in Florida could I use? Because I research and researched and mot of them only have HMO's

Re: Delivery. I use a v small, independent pharmacy, in my general neighborhood. They are great folks. Among other items, they automatically use Walmart pricers, if cheaper than my insurance. They also deliver for free. And, you might want to know, CVS in our area (northern FL) has begun free home delivery.

".....do not understand why AARP continues to endorse or put their name behind this company....."

The answer is money.   Big money.

ao6266,  United HealthCare Insurance pays AARP around $850-$900 million a year in fees/royalties for the use of the AARP name and endorsement.  OptumRx (formerly Prescription Solutions) is an affiliate of UHC.

I got kicked off here a few months ago,  threads booted,  for discussing this,  so you may never see this reply -  But  -

AARP doesn't care which insurance companies they endorse,   Nor make any effort to monitor quality,  integrity,  customer satisfaction,  or anything else with these companies.  It's all about the $$$.   UHC was the highest bidder,  and they have held on tightly now for years.  It could easily have been Mutual of Omaha,  Cigna,  or any other of the big players who offered enough dough to nail this sweetheart deal.  It is predicted that by 2017-18  the fees AARP rakes in from UHC will reach one Billion dollars a year.   Think about that.

Sweetheart deal,  as clearly,  studies have been done to show millions of gullible senior citizens are lured into choosing health insurance,  auto insurance,  homeowners based on this illusion of "trusting"  AARP to have their best interests at heart.  Listen closely to the TV commercials and notice how often the hype of "do business with a name you can T R U S T " comes up.

ao,   as I have mentioned here over and over,  if you want a more thorough understanding of just how these financial arrangments with the insurers work to the detriment of senior citizens/AARP members,   please Google  Congressional special report "Behind the Veil,  the AARP America Doesn't Know".  It is  quite lengthy,  but worth your while to read it through in its entirety.  (Warn you,  it is not for the faint-hearted,  you will be surprised,  indignant and enraged at some of what you will read.

In the meantime,  if it makes you feel any better,  you are just one of many who have been duped by OptumRx.  Here's 704 other irate members you can commiserate with:

I have finally given up on OptumRX. Lost orders; unfilled orders; 15+ minute wait time on hold, with the same 25 piano notes, only to be cut off; know-nothing personel on phone; dropped calls; did not follow through with refill requests with doctor; late orders; and many more mistakes. I tried more than 8 times over the course of a year to use this service, and finally gave up. Yes, IF they ever happen to fill a prescription, it is less money. The savings are nowhere near the cost in frustration in dealing with this unprofessional incompetent company.  Never again will I attempt to use OptumRX. JerryCPP, Cashmere, Washington

I don't like mail-0rder at all. I used Rite-Aid and they messed up my order first off...then I had trouble with my meds until I went to the local drug store and I pay $4 every 3 months and it's worth it.
