I know what you mean about the stains on the skin - it's awful when you want to wear shorts & sandles. I wear the Kushy Foot knee highs which are lightly graduated compression, only cost sbout 5 bucks at Publix, and they last a long time, are better than the 'medical' stockings. And they work very well for not being real tight, plus, even the sheer ones help to cover up unsightly skin.

The rash you have is probably Stasis Dermatitis, caused from Venous Insufficiency. Definitely see a doctor. This can lead to other serious problems like Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots) and you are more at risk for getting a serious infection called Cellulitis on your lower legs.
Do your lower legs & ankles sometimes get very swollen? Usually the swelling is what causes the itching, along with how this chronic condition changes your skin.
Wearing compression stockings can greatly help to keep the skin from getting damaged more by keepng the swelling down, and you might not need the real strong compression stockings that cost a lot, try Kushy Foot brand, light graduated compression knee highs - its important to prevent the swelling. I used to buy them at Publix for about $5, and they last a long time if you hand wash. They also have a website : http://www.kushyfoot.com/products/knee-high-socks-light-support.aspx

Also, do the foot and legs exercises that prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis, like they have you do after surgery, or while on a plane ride. Also, keep your salt intake low, and drink plenty of water to flush out edema (unless you are on fluid restrictions for other reasons).

Sometimes this condition is caused by sitting a lot - while sitting, do the toe, foot, & leg exercises, and get up and walk around ever so often. Below is a link about Venous Insufficiency & Stasis Dermatitis:
https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/000834.htm
Your doctor can do an ultrasound to check your veins & arteries in your legs, and to rule out clots & DVT.

About Cellulitis : If your lower legs, ankles, feet and or toes get really red, hot, and itchy (with or without swelling), you could hsve cellulitis, which requires antibiotics, usualky Keflex. If not treated, the redness will travel up your leg, and could cause sepsis, which is very dangerous. This is another reason to keep the swelling down, and to exercise to keep your blood moving as much as possible, as those 2 things make the perfect conditions for cellulitis to set in.

Good Luck to you.

I have a discoloration on my lower right leg. It sometime itches so bad I want to scream. I did go to a doctor & he said it is 'veinous insufficiency'. That means that the vein isn't properly pumping the blood back up to the heart. It's kind of like a leaky valve & suggested compression stockings. For the itch, I found that cortisone 10 helps a lot.

Hope I was able to help a little. Good luck.

Thank you, my doctor told me the same thing and refered me to a vein specialist.  I havent been yet, .  Really don't know how serious,  I did ask doctor if could cause an heart attack, she said no.

I think a lot of the itching was because of dry skin, stopped using lotion for awhile,   but do still have itching and creepy crawly feelings at times.   I do use the compression socks,        She said the brown color is staining from the blood being so close to skin surface.   I know sure is ugly.  Even on top of my feet, which makes wearing sandals hard, very unsightly.  Again thanks.

Rash on lower legs

Message 5 of 5 (971 Views)

Started a small rash on top of feet 2 years ago.  Now all of lower legs are covered with this rash. No actual bumps.   Sometimes itches,  other times burns, sometimes hurts.   Other times feels like a cobweb is being swiped across leg.  Don't think lotion that I use as it used all over body,  no problems with rest of body.    At times it goes away, but leaves brown spots  then comes back with the red.   Any ideas   ....Have done some research,   something about circulation.
